Ma reale fonte di ispirazione per Amma Asante è stato un ritratto di Belle, interpretata dall'attrice Gugu Mbatha-Raw, e della cugina Elizabeth: “Everything you will have taken thematically from the film is what the portrait said to me the first time I saw it”.
