Así nos vemos...
This is how we look like...
When people here on Tumblr discuss Latin American or Latinx issues, they usually overlook our rich multiracial heritage. Shortly after George Floyd’s murder, many Twitter users began spreading the hashtag #brownlivesmatter on social media. They held this idea that Latin American and black are mutually exclusive terms. They aren’t.
Latin Americans are black, indigenous, mixed-race, and yes, white.
In my country, Colombia, about 10% of the population is black. This is an outdated statistic. So, it’s estimated that at least 25% of the population is of African descent.
Afro-Colombians lack visibility in the mainstream media and are discriminated against. It’s not common to see a black person in congress or in a telenovela. Nevertheless, some very talented afro-Colombians have managed to defy the industry’s prejudice. I have included these wonderful people above. Here are their names:
Angely Gaviria (actor), Jair Romero (actor), Indhira Serrano (actor), Julio Cesar Meza (singer and actor), Luis Felipe Cortes (actor) and Gloria Martinez (singer), Oscar Figueroa (weightlifter), Caterine Ibargüen (athlete) .
