Dark academia asks : Ego and Dante
Hey! Thanks for the ask, I love getting them!
Ego: What type of academia are you? Dark, light, chaotic, fairy, darkest, gothic, romantic, theater, etc
I call my style of academia Afro-Academia or Afrodemia. For me, it’s essentially any subset of traditional academia mixed with traditional and modern African American and Afro-Caribbean style and focusing more heavily on literature created by and for POC, specifically (for me) Black People. For more classical literature think of Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison. For more modern literature check out the genre Afrofuturism and Nalo Hopkinson. The fashion for dark academia can be reminiscent of the Black Panther party or can be any preconceived style of academia combined with styles that were created by Black people in Africa or any African Diaspora: Large earrings, Natural hairstyles, headwraps, and some streetwear, etc. Here are a few examples of fashion:
There is also an extreme focus on social justice, activism, feminism, advocacy, and an insistence on redesigning political and social systems to be equal and equitable. Afro Academic can range from protestors marching the streets against police violence to scholars who use the knowledge left behind by activists before them to advocate for change.
That’s a super long answer but that IS how I define my academia when asked.
Dante: What, of the seven deadly sins, do you associate yourself with?
I would probably say Lust or Wrath!
