María Elena Moyano (Lima, November 29, 1958 – Lima, February 15, 1992) was an Afro-Peruvian social activist and community leader from the Villa El Salvador district. During the armed conflict of the 1980s and 1990s, she opposed the Shining Path terrorist organization and was assassinated at the age of 33 by one of its death squads. She is recognized for her fight against poverty and for her defense of human rights and women's rights.

I’ve learned an extraordinary amount from works of art created on canvases, stunning garments crafted with agile hands threading and piecing together rich fabrics, through movement of the body, fluid speech, and impactful words dripping from the wisdom of elders and ancestors that remain with us always. I am SO glad I made a commitment to myself to attend more events, specifically this month in celebration of my heritage, which is #historyforall Friends, when we learn about other #cultures or most importantly our own, pieces of you come together, forming an even more complete picture than existed before. I am healing. I am experiencing. I am embracing. I am becoming whole. 10’s of millions of Africans were stolen and sold into slavery. In 43 days I embark on a photographic journey, the first of many, that will document the African Diaspora in Latin America. First stop, San Basilio de Palenque, a community that was granted it’s independence from the Spanish Crown in 1691 due to it’s resilience and intelligent network of facilitating escapes. Over centuries they’ve maintained a great deal of their African culture and traditions, and speak the only known Spanish creole, a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese, and Bantu. For over ten yrs this has been a dream of mine. Can’t wait to land in Cartagena.
