ARCHAEOLOGY: Discovering The World’s Secrets - The Americas. The Lord of Sipan. South America’s cultural patrimony has been plundered for hundreds of years. Peruvian archaeologist #walteralva saved the spectacular tomb of the #lordofsipán from a similar fate. In 1987, the director of the National Archaeological Museum received a call in the middle of the night. Tomb-robbers had found the grave of a high-ranking #mohican warrior-priest and taken precious gold and silver treasures. Within hours, it would be headed for the black market — out of the country. When he first arrived on the scene, the impoverished local community had descended upon the Husca Rajada, consisting of two adobe pyramids and a low platform, in the hope of finding valuable leftovers. With the help of the police, gov’t funds and Nat’l Geographic, Alva and his team were able to persuade them to stop the looting. There, they uncovered the elaborate tomb of the Lord of Sipan, a #mohican lord, and six other people. A total of 451 ceremonial items were discovered at the site. Evacuations continued, and two more tombs were found. #ancientcivilizations #peruvianhistory #southamericanhistory #peru🇵🇪 #worldhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CNs0IaOLjNd/?igshid=2v0jbzit9qme
