Afro No Punk: Things to do in Atlanta since you already took off work
The inaugural AFROPUNK FEST ATL promised to be a weekend filled with music, art, activism and fellowship, “rain or shine.” Unfortunately, most hopeful concertgoers failed to read the invisible fine print. The tickets actually read “rain or shine, unless it rains, then you on your own pimpin’.”
To the credit of the AFROPUNK Team; performing during Hurricane Joaquin sounds very punk rock in theory, but in reality is a very dicey business move and potential safety hazard. Less than a week before AFROPUNK announced the festival cancellation, TomorrowWorld Music Festival in the Chattahoochee Hills of Georgia experienced light rain that eventually turned into a muddy mess. Read more here. Furthermore, a flash flood watch is effective from 2AM on Saturday morning until 8PM on Sunday night. The AFROPUNK powers that be ultimately made a decision that saved more than time and money, but human currency. Your life is priceless Homes.
To the “debit” of the AFROPUNK Team; artists, vendors and fans from around the country have invested money and precious time preparing for this event. There could have been an effort made to postpone the festival as opposed to cancelling the 2015 festivities altogether. The marketing and promotions team also neglected to disable the automated email reminders after the announcement. The Eventbrite “don’t forget your tickets” email served as an invitation to troll AFROPUNK on Twitter.
Here’s the good news. If you are already in Atlanta, or plan on flying out despite the festival debacle, *cue Michael Jackson* you are not alone. Nearly 10,000 tickets were sold/earned for the event. This weekend will be an awesome opportunity to cross paths with likeminded people looking to make the best of the cancellation.
Here are a few events in Atlanta that will make you feel like you attended AFROPUNK FEST ATL:
Kelela show at Masquerade
Kelela announced via Twitter that she would be performing at Masquerade on Saturday night. Hopefully, more artist that were scheduled to perform will follow suit.
BONFIRE ATL
A “community kickback” and party for residents in the area. Everyone is invited!
Artlanta Gallery Opening
Artlanta made the list because of their irreverent “Art Without Rules” tagline. They also stress that the opening will go on “rain or shine.” Sweet, sweet shade.
Bodies: The Exhibition Groupon for $18
This is just a cool exhibit that’s in Atlanta until November.
AFROPUNK After Dark
After Dark is an official AFROPUNK event intended to be part of the festival. If you are not too mad at AFROPUNK go check them out. This may be the easiest way to gather with other displaced festivalgoers.
Peace and Love
