10 Spooky BLs

Here are some of my favorite spooky BLs. I'm not a huge fan of horror, I don't like gore and I don't like jump scares. So keep that in mind with these picks. Also, some of the makeup and special effects will feel very... CW. But I kinda like that, less scary that way!

Khemjira

Thailand 2025 iQIYI

The story of a boy laboring under a curse, haunted by ghosts and demons, who’s family, friends, and (eventual) lover all try to help him via spiritual and physical means. While very much a horror BL (not my genre), I’m very glad that I gave this a chance. This is a diaphanous magical BL of the kind that only really comes along once a year these days - with more lingering notes of I Feel You Linger in the Air than any actual gay horror I could name. I’m not sure it’s going in my personal rewatch rotation, but I admire its (and its actors) otherworldly beauty, stylish NC scenes, cultural relevancy, and elegant execution and impact. Boy and ghost boy fall in love, must solve ghost’s murder. Peak pining but heat levels are very tame (if not puritanical), so this is safe to watch with most anyone. It's not scary at all IMHO. Features my favorite sweet but important coming out sequence. Ohm and Singto both act their chops off, the cultural touchstones are fascinating, the interpersonal relationships complex, and the mystery element intriguing. This is a seriously slept on early GMMTV gem of a show.

Secret Relationships

An entirely unhinged story about a very troubled office worker and the three men who are passionately in love with him. Two of whom are very warped and psychotic about it. This is an unadulterated melodrama, and extreme in always including domestic violence, kidnapping for love, and some light stabbing. As ya do. It’s a wild ride, but enjoyable. The visuals are excellent, the acting is fun if chewy, and the chemistry is good all round. However, since it edges into suspense horror this kind of BL has a low rewatch potential and too much violence for me personally.

Ghost Host Ghost House

Boys shack up with ghosts and each other, revelations occur. This is light horror combined with family drama built around a well executed BL romance that felt honestly queer with fantastic chemistry from the lead pair. Pluem delivers the softest most seductive "krap" ever, Tod Techit (Kewin) is one of the prettiest humans on the planet, and watching these boys flirt over noodles is an unalloyed pleasure. Use of I/you pronouns is super interesting and cute, as well. For me, personally, the surrounding cast, premise, and story didn’t resonate as much as the BL aspects, but if you like a touch of ghost story in your BL this might appeal.

Stay By My Side

Taiwan 2023 Viki/Gaga

This show was an interesting take on the "ghost boyfriend" trope (v old one for BL, particularly loved in early sad CBL). About a boy who is tormented by hearing the dead, except when he is around one other boy - desperation+proximity = love. Unfortunately, the story was erratic and waffled a bit. And while the leads turned in solid performances and the sappy domesticity was off the charts, it never really had the strength of the narrative convictions such a strong core concept should have supplied. Highly rewatchable and enjoyable for that quintessential Taiwanese gay domesticity but not a whole lot more. Still, I always give extra credit for the diabetes-inducing sugar content and rewatch capacity.

It's from Mandee and horror yet I enjoyed it more than I thought I would given those parameters. It's oddly sweet and wholesome, for a ghost story starring ZeeNunew. Phloeng and Rawee enter into an arranged marriage for confusing prophetic reasons. Twists of fate demand that they solve the mystery of a past that is haunting Phloeng's family and harming Rawee. Pronoun use is ter/chan or rao (no nai or pom) because of the historical setting + softness of the relationship. Honestly, it makes no actual sense, but it's kinda historical, and very pretty, so I enjoyed it.

Sweet Curse

This is a low-gore atmospheric horror microfilm from Strongberry, with some very high heat. It's interesting and sexy but not actually, ya know, good.

So Much In Love

Thailand 2020

I may have been the only person to watch this Thai BL pulp set within a high school volleyball team that encounters ghosts and murders and have complicated sex lives. I do not recommend it, but I kinda enjoyed it at the time. But look at the date, I didn't have much to watch so forgive me any sins if you chose to track this down.

Ancient prince comes back as a ghost when his warrior lover is reincarnated and living in the modern world. I have to say, I enjoyed this pair, but this show is a nothing burger, significant only in that it takes the tired old “my ghost boyfriend” trope and actually gives it a happy ending. Unearned... but happy.

Smart boy in love with zombie incubus, keeps him alive with sex. Japan, king of thirst, gives us both that and the opposite: these two are drowning in yearning and loss. Careful with this one you break it, you bought it, and it’ll break you… wide open just to see what color your guts are. After watching you too might be walking around lost and forgotten and wondering why no one understands your pain.

Know what you are in for and want a good cry though? This is kinda amazing. Brutally sad but... you know what happens in the first 5 minutes and there are no happy endings.

On this episode of “Does that QL have a horse?” Special Edition: After Sundown

Ordinarily, we wouldn't necessarily include a movie as part of the media we are watching for horses, however, After Sundown has the unique distinction of being a BL movie. Set in the 1950's, ZeeNuNew play enemies to lovers who bind their fates together to ward off the elder's looming misfortune of his 25th year. Add in a family mystery and a murderous ghost, and you have After Sundown.

And you also have horses! For as wealthy as Phlerng's parents are, it was a surprise that there weren't actually more horses in the movie, but there are at least two.

In the study/library, there is a horse statuette sitting on an end table (perhaps he was watching as the boys played the xylophone?).

And even more insane, THERE ARE HORSES CARVED INTO PHLERNGRAWEE'S HEADBOARD OF THEIR BED.

The headboard might be the wildest horse object we've seen aside from the Fujoshi Horse Lamp (which is sadly too modern or it'd probably be in this movie too).

Dead Friend Forever 

What is it? 

A Thai horror bl tv show that ran for 12 episodes each at 45mins of length. Available to watch on iQiyi. 

Ok but what IS it?

A show about the horror of friendship that has a literal body count, but you can read the official summary here: 

"Eight school friends take a trip to a vacation house in the mountains. It's supposed to be a last sendoff to a friend who's going to study abroad. The farewell has them revisiting old memories and they discover hints there's a ninth person hidden somewhere in the house. Soon, they're contending with life-threatening incidents and realize this is no ordinary farewell; a dreadful party of disaster awaits them."

What is it? 

A Thai tv show that ran for 14 episodes at 45mins of length. Available to watch on VIU and Gaga.

Ok but what IS it?

Nobody does horror like an oppressive Catholic school OR the full summary below: 

"After his father's cancer diagnosis, Dan transferred to an all-boys boarding school. While navigating a new school, he learns about a mysterious student who disappeared last year, all while dealing with his own Shadow that shows up every night during his dreams..."

The Summer Hikaru Died 

What is it? 

An on-going seinen horror/slice of life manga series available via Yen Press. 

Ok but what IS it?

Small town boy's bestie dies in a hiking accident and an eldritch being walking by says "hey, neat body sir mind if I steal it?" 

Or: 

"It has Hikaru’s face. It has Hikaru’s voice. It even has Hikaru’s memories. But whatever came down from the mountains six months ago isn’t Yoshiki’s best friend. Whatever it is, it’s dangerous. Carrying on at school and hanging out as if nothing has changed—as if Hikaru isn’t gone—would be crazy...but when it looks so very like Hikaru...and acts so very like Hikaru..."

After Sundown 

What is it? 

A Thai supernatural horror film running at 1hr and 45mins and not currently legally available online. 

Ok but what IS it?

Know those two dudes from Cutie Pie? Zee and NuNew? Of course you do, well they did a ghost horror movie where they fall in love in between being haunted, good for them. 

Or: 

"Set in 1961, Saengrawi Raemsawang lived with Luang Lung Janthakorn until he turns twenty-one and is sent to live at Sitthikornkan Castle in Phra Nakhon. The castle is owned by Phraphloeng, currently living abroad. Heading the words of a sage, Phloeng's parents urge him back to Thailand. About to turn twenty-five, a prophecy requires him to soon find his soulmate to secure his safety; they may not be a woman, nor born in Phra Nakhon. Kaleidoscope of Death 

What is it?

A Chinese horror supernatural web novel, 139 chapters in length with 10 bonus chapters, unofficially translated.

Do you know how much it would suck to be stuck in a horror video game? 

Or: 

"It started off peculiarly; first, his domestic cat refused to let him cuddle it.

What is it?

An upcoming Thai tv show from the same studio that brought you Pit Babe, starring the leads of Pit Babe. No official release date yet.

If I had a nickel for every time a ship did a hit show together, then a movie together a year later that is not as loved, sadly, and then a show together 3 years after the first show, I'd have 2 nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice right?

The ghost isn't scary at all, Namping's character is a total bitch, and that dude is his romantic partner (which is why the jealously scenes with Peem vs Pong are extra funny).
