After reading a book about the stars and their constellations, Andrew can regurgitate the facts whenever he wants to. And it just so happens that he comes across a clueless boy who is willing to listen.

This makes two lines at once! (I forgot to reshare when I added a second chapter to one of the other stories, but finally making some headway I guess.)

Excerpt:

“What are you doing?” they asked, and Andrew thought they might be a boy.

“Who are you?” Andrew asked instead.

After a small pause, the boy said, “Alex.”

“I’m looking at the stars,” was Andrew’s response.

The boy straightened up and seemed to tip his head back. Andrew pushed himself up onto his elbow so he could see him better. It was dark, but Andrew saw that he was wearing baggy shorts, an even baggier t-shirt, a cap and ratty shoes. He looked worse than Andrew - at least all of his things were in one piece. The boy’s hair and eye colour remained a mystery since, even when he looked back down at Andrew, the darkness muted everything. But it seemed like his hair was dark and a little long, with curls which spun around his head in messy twirls.

“I’ve seen better,” the boy said, a little smugly.

There was a vague, blurry memory that Nathaniel had that he had never been sure was real. Was it a dream? Wishful thinking? Or had their lives all been sweeter when he’d been a toddler? Nathaniel could never be sure. 

The memory went something like this. Nathaniel was playing with some blocks and cars and a superhero toy when his parents came in. He pouted when he was told it was bedtime, but he’d put his toys away - his dad had stepped on them at one point and gotten hurt, so he made sure to put them away - and he’d let his mom scoop him into her arms. From there, she took him into one of the bathrooms and got him into the bath. His dad watched from the doorway, arms folded, talking to them both.

Nathaniel never remembered the words, only that they all smiled and laughed as he splashed about.

Abram was five years old when his father started to hurt him.

Abram was eight years old, nearly nine, when his mother had finally had enough and slipped away with him in the night. He was nine years old when he first stitched a wound. And he was ten years old when he first learnt French, then German.

Abram was twelve years old when his mother died. He was still twelve when he realised that he was too young to travel great distances without being noticed. And he had just turned thirteen when he finally called his uncle.

Abram was thirteen years old when he first met his long lost twin sister.

She was lucky. There was no trace of Abram’s father in her. Instead, Abram found it hard to speak, struck dumb with how much she looked like his mother. His vision blurred as he teared up. Despite the way she’d hit him, Abram fiercely missed his mother. But, while his mother was there, her darker hair still had red in it and her eyes were a steely grey. Instead of the practical, faded clothing that Abram had gotten used to his mother wearing, this girl was wearing a patterned dress and a fake-leather jacket.
