funky cognitohazard agan harrison!

[image description: Two digital drawings of Agan Harrison. Agan is facing profile left and is a staticky humanoid figure in a firefighter jacket. The two drawings are the same, but the blurred and layered multicolored visage of Agan is incredibly bright and saturated, while the other is more muted. /end image description]

agan and amal + getting home?
Agan had thought getting back to Breckenridge would be a relief. They didn’t know Edric’s apartment but they’d lived in Breckenridge even before The Great Return. They’d missed the clock tower and the place near the Pocket that made strawberry scones and they’d even missed the cramped performance space of Backstage.
It was good to be around places they at least mostly recognized and at least some people they recognized. Breckenridge hadn’t changed much since Season 3 but the Jazz Hands had. Tamara, Campos, Walton, Baby Doyle, and Lowe were the only people they’d known. Kath Math half counted but ze was an alternate and while they’d talked about alternation, ze wasn’t the same person they’d played with. They didn’t know if they could call the feeling pain or hurt but the Call tightened like a fist around something inside their chest. A come home come home come home repeated, a crackle of static.
It’s three days into their visit when Agan pulls Amal out to go snowshoeing. There’s always snow on the trails and it gets the kind of quiet that lets you sit with your thoughts. There’s the sound of birds and animals picking their way between trees and sometimes someone else on the same trail but the crunch of snow underfoot is louder than all of them.
Amal had insisted on Agan bundling up. They’re layered in a sweater and a coat and a scarf and gloves and a hat and two pairs of socks and long underwear underneath everything. Agan’s body has caught up to the idea of being alive again, to breathing and blood going out to their hands and feet, but they appreciate the gesture after spending their first few days back underneath quilts, trying to remember how to shiver to get warm.
They take a break halfway through a loop around town. Agan looks up at the mountains and the sky and down at Breckenridge and the Call resonates in their body (come home come home come home) and nothing they can do quiets it. Amal asks if they’re okay and they say yes because they don’t know how to put the feeling of homesickness for a place they’ve never loved into words.
