This might seem like an unusual thing to point out, since you'll never directly have contact with that problem...but many DW fans from countries with languages which have articles (male/female/...) now wonder how the synchro will turn out. In German for example 'Der Doktor' would be a weird thing to say to an obviously female person, but I can't really imagine them changing it to 'Die Doktor'/'Die Doktorin'. It emphasises gender even though gender was supposed to become insignificant...
Oh, that’s an interesting point. Does the language default masculine for cases of unknown gender or multiple people of multiple genders? I know French does. Perhaps that could explain continuing to refer to the character the same?
But yeah, that’s a whole extra issue I hadn’t really considered. Because it’s kinda political, really, to respond, either to change it or not, you know? But it’s something you can’t help but do.

As someone who likes to write historically accurate themselves, I can understand his view. And he researched til he found the story of a black soldier in the Victorian army and then named the character after him. Sounds ok to me…but hey

I feel like it's hard to fight back against all this hate, since spiteful words sound so much louder. Could you imagine organising another fundraiser for Switchboard on JustGiving? It would be a way to show support for Mark in a very beneficial way.
I would be willing to do it as actions most certainly speak louder than words. My only concern is that it may fuel the fires additionally and I really don’t want more negative attention to come to either Mark or Switchboard. If people are interested in doing this, I will gladly start it up again.

It’s interesting that I have queer friends who said ‘we need more queer jokes’ and aren’t bothered at all by the dialogue in Sherlock and then there are Johnlockers who get so pissed off about it. Maybe it’s shipper perspective that’s the problem here…
do you find it interesting? really? let me tell you an interesting story then:
when i first came out to my friends that i was bisexual, one of them IMMEDIATELY made "clam digging" jokes for several hours with accompanying hand gestures of "clams rubbing" while everyone laughed like it was the pinnacle of comedy. because i am the only queer person in the friend group, i had to sit there and laugh along. that was really fun and interesting to be a part of.
i then had to come out AGAIN several months later because my guy friends assumed i was just ~kidding around~ and trying to be "one of the guys" every time i discussed girls with them. not only that, i had to argue with them that bisexuality is legitimate, which was a super fulfilling and interesting discussion. guess what super hilarious joke got brought back up? once again, i had to sit there and laugh along.
in a shocking turn of events, a few months after that, i had to tell one of my friends AGAIN that i was bisexual, because apparently he had totally forgot the 2 other nights he'd spent coining the really interesting and hilarious clam digging joke. but the best and most interesting joke came later, when someone asked me if i was "still a miss, or is it mister now?"
so, full offense, but i've had my fill of gay jokes for a lifetime. especially ones where i am singled out as the punchline.
but i really do appreciate your super patronizing tone in assuming i only ship things for the visual stimulation and not because i am suffering from a drought of characters that could possibly represent me and people like me.
feel free to totally ignore my blog and my completely legitimate complaints from here on out, i don't mind.

@agent-elaine - I like to think I am a very warm person not cold (apart from my feet which causes loud swearing from my OH), I’m staring to go grey at the temples but am doing remarkably well considering my wee brother (2 yrs younger) is very salt-n-pepper already and I never touch whiskey. Whisky otoh ;) I’m quite partial to - and I love a Whisky Mac when I’ve got a cold.
@vachebleu - I would absolutely wear a kilt if I was a bloke. I think they’re wonderful. I love our mountains but I’m more of a lochs kind of person. I’ve sailed on several but only climbed one Munro (Schiehallion). I adore shortbread - which isn’t a bread, it’s a biscuit ;)
