I've been thinking about getting Oxenfree and i know basically nothing about the story. should i get it?
well it depends on the kind of game youre into! Like, overall, I think Oxenfree is a pretty swell game, I just have some problems irt certain storytelling aspects and what is considered a good/bad end for it (a little bit on characterization as well, but, hey)
Its a pretty slow game overall? not that its slow paced just that… moving around in the game is very slow (there is no quick travel so if you need something all the way across the map, you gotta trek for it), its super dialogue driven, and you do have to pay attention to little details in it. For me personally, I’m not a big fan of slow moving games HOWEVER…it is something that works well for Oxenfree, and its atmosphere relies on it and keeps the pacing smooth.
Plot progression and a lot of gameplay is based on how you choose to treat other characters & the direction you take Alex’s (player character) personality
Which, btw, in comparison to a looooot of other “choose your own adventure” type games with an established main character, Oxenfree does a muuuuuuch better job at keeping Alex’s core personality present in most of her choices to like, all others I’ve seen (this was one of my huge issues with Life is Strange). This is how I can say that I do like Alex overall and she is actually a really strong character? you basically get to choose the direction of her character arc whether its positive or negative
For the most part, the characters in it are endearing! The plot is cool (its about ghosts on an island, and radios, and time shenanigans. all youll get outta me cause its honestly best experienced firsthand)! The music and atmosphere? Some of the best I’ve heard/experienced in a long while, I honestly cannot recommend the ost enough if nothing else. Some narrative end choices/treatment of some of those characters? not always the best, but definitely not something thats a game killer
