“Actually--” Gwen steps forward, reaching a hand out to stop him, “I’ll go.”
There’s a palpable hesitation in the air as Owen pauses, eyeing her. They all know that Ianto harbors a particular dislike for the man whose face she now wears, but she can only hope he’ll put it aside for the moment. “I want to talk to him,” she reiterates. She simply wants to talk to someone who is, usually, a grounding force in her life. There’s another moment of hesitation, before Owen nods, stepping out of her way.
“Do you want me to come with?” Rhys asks, and she turns back to him with a soft smile, though she’s unsure how such an expression translates on this face.
“No, it’ll only be a few moments, I promise, lovely.”
There is doubt on his face, but he nods, stepping back to allow her to go, and her expression flashes a grateful tone before she goes to descend the stairs. There’s a momentary fumble at it, but she manages, quickly disappearing up through the doorway and into the pathway that leads up to the office.
When she opens the door, Ianto is alone, sorting pamphlets behind the desk as she exits from the main area of the Hub.
There’s a visible wariness to his gaze as he turns to her, a little too quickly, far more on his guard than he would have been under normal circumstances. In fact, she can imagine that had she looked and sounded like herself, he wouldn’t have even looked up. “...Gwen.” She can’t blame the way his gaze trails over her for a long moment, before brilliantly blue eyes flick up to meet her gaze once more. “How are you?”
“I’m trapped in the body of the most aggravating man I know, so I’ll have to say today’s one for the record books,” she returns. Instinct would have her stepping towards him, perching on the desk and swinging her legs as they spoke. Caution keeps her where she is, standing awkwardly by the hidden stone doorway. Her hands seems too useless at her sides, so she shoves them deep into the pockets of Rhys’ leather jacket.
“Yep, can’t imagine it’s pleasant.” He returns to sorting the pamphlets, and she shifts around the desk as casually as she can, opting to seat herself on the opposite side. He glances up, briefly, before going back to his job. “I’ll bet Rhys is a bit wary?”
You also get a deleted scene, this one from I Know Not Everybody (Has a Body Like You), in which Gwen went to speak to Ianto rather than Rhys. I’m sure I’ll write something like this awkward interaction later, but I have to say I prefer the version that led to Rhys & Ianto’s Excellent Drug Run.
