What kind of animal is AC Jack?

Honestly learning how to properly comment on fics made my fandom life so much better. I talk about my favorites bits! Or get excited about characterization! Sometimes I just keysmash and say I love it so much I can't words! When I analyze it's to talk about how they conveyed the emotion of a scene! And how much I loved that! And the author doesn't always reply but when they do they're so happy to talk about their fic more! Positive comments are life.

That's the thing that makes it so OBVIOUS that people who say they're trying to help really AREN'T. Because you're right: positive reinforcement works wonders. If you don't know someone and they haven't asked you to tell them what's wrong, telling someone what they did right is way more helpful than telling them what they did wrong. It encourages them to try again, and trying again gives them further opportunities to learn and grow and have fun doing it. If you dishearten them by picking at them when they didn't ask you to, they may not try again, and there's no chance to improve, no chance to know they WANT to improve.

I look at it this way:

I pick up a guitar. I pluck a few notes at random and decide I want to know how to do this thing for fun. I sign up for lessons with someone that teaches guitar to beginners (think: beta reader) I'm learning, but I know enough to start playing a little on my own, so I do. One time I decide I'll play where others that like guitar music can hear me. Nine people tell me "you're doing great, I love that you're playing, thanks for letting us listen in!" And one person comes by and says "you hit some wrong notes, and you're holding the guitar a little weird and you shouldn't be playing in public unless you can take criticism, you have to be ready to be a rockstar if you're going to play at all."

The person saying those things is literally just an asshole. I already have someone helping me learn, someone I signed up for that is telling me when things need work. I'm not planning on going pro (but even if I was, I already have a teacher, and will move toward that goal on my own time). I'm the embodiment of "just here to have a good time, and feeling so attacked right now."

So yeah. You're right, positive reinforcement of the way to go, and anyone that doesn't know HOW to give it instead of criticism can come to my inbox and ask me, or there's plenty of posts out there that have examples of potential ways to interact kindly with fanfic writers.
