SUMMARY → Becca and Oliver fight their fears by trying out Professor Xavier’s optional assignment. Written for aghprompt30.

BECCA: 

Becca had hardly eaten during lunch, picking at her food and shuffling it from one side of her plate to the other. She was scared enough of the assignment that lay before her; she didn’t need to add being afraid of throwing up to the list of things weighing her down as she had the Unforgivable Curse cast on her. She and Oliver hadn’t planned much beyond the fact that they’d be working together, so as lunch drew to a close and people started to disperse out of the Great Hall, she went over to meet him at the Gryffindor table, silently slipping her hand into his as they started the long walk to Professor Xavier’s office.

Becca tried to offer him a reassuring smile, but she knew that no matter how important this assignment was, it was going to be one of the hardest things they’d ever done in their life. She also knew that whatever pain she was going to feel, it probably couldn’t compare to how awful it was going to be to see him suffering instead. Unable to muster any of her normal excited chattering, instead Becca squeezed his hand again as they quietly approached Professor X’s office. Standing before the statue that would let them inside finally, she stood on tiptoes to press a kiss to his cheek, then asked him, “Are you ready for this?”

Becca: Olly? Where are you? They put everything on lockdown but I can't find you in the Great Hall.

Becca: Olly? I've looked everywhere, but I still couldn't find you :(

Becca: Where are you? Why aren't you answering me?

Becca: Merlin, please just have dropped your phone in pumpkin juice. Please, please, please.

Becca: You're really starting to scare me :( What's happening? Why aren't you here?

Becca: I love you. I love you so much, and I'm really scared that wherever you are, you're not okay :(

YOU’RE MAKING SOMETHING SO PURE AND SWEET INTO SOMETHING VERY CREEPY, OLIVER HUFFLEPUFF HOPKINS! YOU’RE LUCKY I DIDN’T LEARN THIS ABOUT YOU SOONER; I LOVE YOU TOO MUCH NOW FOR IT TO BE A DEALBREAKER. OKAY, LET’S TRY IT AGAIN. DON’T THINK OF IT AS SKIN, THINK OF THE RAINBOW FISH AS HAVING A LOT OF LOVELY SHINY BEAUTIFUL KIDNEYS. HE ONLY REALLY NEEDS ONE TO SURVIVE, AND NONE OF THE OTHER FISH HAVE KIDNEYS. NOW DO YOU THINK IT’S BAD FOR HIM TO SHARE? The Giving Tree makes me cry. We read The Giving Tree, we cry over it, when we move on. We don’t talk about it at length because then I’d be really, really broken from too much thinking. And then you’d have to hug it all better, and then there would be no more storytime because I’d need an eternal hug.

[PM] You are lucky I love you and will forgive you for TOTALLY NOT APPRECIATING THE MORAL TUCKED BEHIND A FLASHY RAINBOW FISH! You probably were never selfish enough as a kid to need to be taught to share your beautiful rainbow scales with the world, anyway. HOWEVER I HOPE YOU KNOW THIS MEANS I WILL JUST BE READING YOU MORE CHILDREN’S BOOKS TO SEE IF ANY OF THEM RESONATE WITH YOU OR NOT! Be prepared for lots of story time this spring and summer.
