his eyes are stinging, sore and swollen alreadyfrom how tired he'll be in the morning. it's lateenough in the night, with the sun almost flickeringunder the heavy curtains, that he can alreadyfeel a phantom headache. his elbow is slippingoff the arm of the chair. his shoulders are soft like they never are, tucked against the back of the couch. even this, he fights.
he's the kind of drunk that's a yawn in the back of your throat and a heavy feeling in your chest that you can usually shift when you're sober. he runs his clumsy hand over his forehead as if it will smooth his furrowed brow. his voice doesn't quite slur, but it's close. he drops his hand furtherand covers his eyes.
"He's more selfish than he'll let you give him credit for. He's good, he's--. Debatably. But he's not a ssaint.
He wouldn't be able to play chess without his --"
he makes a hand gesture for his powers that's probably more obscene than one charles everuses.

in erik's uncertainty there's a trinity of movement: his parting mouth, the bob of his throat, the flickof his tongue to the corner of his lip as if hismouth is dry.
he seems to fall into thought, stupor-like. silentfor minutes.
before he opens his mouth again he wipesclammy palms on the thigh of his slacks.
