agtkansas asked stfu-moffat:
At least from a long time ago, one of the reasons for a woman changing her last name was to show ownership of her to a man because women were thought more of as property. They started out as their father's property then were the property of the husband they married. If I do get married I don't think I'll be willing to give up my last name.
That is true, although that isn't why women change their names now, obviously (and many traditions - including some aspects of weddings now - have their roots in sexism).
I, personally, wouldn't give up my surname, because my mother didn't so I've never seen the point of it - my parents are happily married and discuss feminism together - so it's never really seemed very tempting to me and (in my mind) it's normal for women to keep their surnames, not change them. But most of my female friends intend to change their surname when they marry, and although I don't really understand why, it's up to them (although if the surname is particularly awful it can be hard not to say anything). It's their name, so if they decide that they don't mind the sexist roots (and, as I've said before, many parts of life have sexist roots, it's pretty hard to avoid, so you can't kick someone out of the feminism club for doing one of them), it's their decision, even though I wouldn't do it.
What really bothers me is men who expect women to change their surname and have gender-neutral reasons for doing so ("I want our family to all have one surname", "I think we should have the better surname"), but if you suggest that they change their surname they are SHOCKED and OUTRAGED because that's for their girlfriends to do, not them, you man-hating feminist, you. Putting pressure on your partner to change their surname to yours is sexist and mean.

"Mhm, for now I gotta go do some things but ah, feel free to come on over anytime. Later, handsome." Kansas pinched his cheek softly.
The man let out a little squeak as he blushed, watching the woman saunter away.
Kansas took the opportunity and planted one back on his lips.
The spartan let his hands glide as they would, running them up and down her body, before pulling away. "Definitely later."
