that last post was originally about the dean + mary mirrors of it all but then i got caught up in the mary so here was my original point:
the most important thing to mary is choice which manifests in family. and she decides the only way choice is possible is through Normal and the only way to achieve Normal is through draping herself in femininity and performing it with white nightgowns and sundresses. and it slowly becomes clear to her that it’s not what she wants. she wants to chop her hair off in front of a mirror and put her boots back on and take a weekend away from her kids.
the most important thing to dean early seasons is family (which later manifests in choice!) and he decides the best way to achieve family is by saying yessir and layering on the masculinity and leather jackets and alcohol. and it slowly becomes clear to him that it’s not what he wants. he wants choice he wants Normal he wants to lay down his tools and just Be in a home with people he loves
