Zerg, Protoss, and Terran. These are more than just types of races in a game. They are part of a lifestyle, especially here at Storm8. There are daily lunch gatherings to watch game footage of live and past matches to learn new strategies and always stay one step ahead of your opponent.
Hot on the heels of a decisive victory in a 5-player Free For All match to determine the 8th seeded team in the After Hours Gaming League playoffs, Storm8 was all but expected to fall easily to the previously undefeated Epic team. We were the obvious underdogs, but we were not ready to go down without a fight! Earlier in the AHGL season, Storm8 lost to Epic in a very close best-of-five match (2-3). Despite the loss, Storm8 members were confident in their abilities. “It was a close match before, much better than some of the other teams had done against Epic,” said ‘Raiden’ of Storm8. Entering this quarterfinal match, Storm8 was going to do its best to overcome the odds. After 4 games, we had stormed ahead to a shocking lead (3-1) in a best-of-seven match to determine who would continue to the semi-finals. The 5th game pitted Storm8’s ‘Terran’ against Epic’s ‘Jdub’ in a tightly contested battle. We weren’t able to pull off the win and the match ended up continuing.
That loss brought up a crucial turning point in the match. Could Storm8 clinch it here or would Epic tie it up and bring it to a final game to decide the victor? This game matched up ‘Raiden’ against Epic’s ‘Destro’. With everything on the line for the opposing team, they needed to pull out a win. The game looked pretty evenly matched up until 'Raiden' spotted an opening and took full advantage of it to pull ahead, “When I hit him with two Banelings at the end, I knew I was going to win!”
With that victory, Storm8 advances to the AHGL semi-finals against Amazon and the team is already watching game footage to prepare for battle. With gamer pride (and money for charity!) on the line, this is serious business!
Summing up Storm8’s success thus far, co-captain ‘Uberdabing’ said, “We're extremely excited at this opportunity and happy that all our practice has finally shown results. We're going to continue to work hard and make it to the finals.” Can Storm8 continue its Cinderella Story run in the playoffs? Time will certainly tell.
