Paving a new way of life can be stressful, discouraging, and far from glamorous! Because of my shaky relationship with food (ever healing), stepping out of my comfort zone to make something new is terrifying. If the recipe does not turn out well, I'm awfully hard on myself. Why do we do this? Push ourselves down, especially when creating something new? Maybe the fear or failure? Or that need we sometimes come across to emulate someone else's perceived life? Allowing fear to stop you from building a healthy life that feels right to you hurts so much more than it helps. It will not be easy. Every thing you try won't be perfect or even good. Then little gems start to pop up. You find a yoga flow or teacher that resonates with you. A recipe tastes amazing, finally. You realize your body is more capable than you believe. Those moments are worth it all. Don't let your fear drag you down. Change is the only constant, so embrace it. Hello! i went to veg fest this year and there was a bunch of things that said ahimsa and i’m writing a paper on veganism and it just came up again, but i’d never heard of it before. like i don’t feel like people on tumblr say they ascribe to it or anything and it feels culturally appropriative to me. i guess i’m just wondering your thoughts on it?

Ahisma is a spiritual concept, and is a fundamental principle in Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. I don't think that belief in an ethical or metaphysical concepts can ever be racially or culturally specific, so I don't think it's appropriative for anyone to take on that belief. I also feel the same way about people who just believe in ahisma but not the rest of the religious dogma attached to it.

It becomes less acceptable when it's just being used as a buzzword, or as some sort of taken out of context hippy catchphrase. But as a serious, core philosophy to base your veganism around I think it makes absolute sense as a foundational belief that you incorporate into your veganism. The history of vegetarianism and veganism are pretty well connected with the concept of ahisma and non-violence too, so it isn't just two unrelated concepts mashed together.
