I'm thinking how extremely hopeless and depressing this situation has been for Jihyeok. He worked hard all his life to be who he is today: a man who is calculative, clear-headed, knows exactly what he wants and when to cut losses. a guy who has a solid moral compass, determined not to turn out like his dad. a son who's had to grow up way sooner and be the best version of him to make his mom happy. And now it's all. falling. apart. before his eyes.

He now has no idea where his life is headed because his reasoning and his heart are constantly battling each other; he is tempted by his feelings, barely tethered to the moral ground that has started to shift and shake violently; he is a son who hates the idea of sharing the same genes as his father, a son who may never be able to look his mother in the eyes if he gives in to his temptation.

(also malfunctioning at jang kiyong's performance here because the sheer duality?!?)

If this were not a romcom I'd be scared to go on because this is literally Jihyeok living his worst nightmare and getting dragged deeper into it like quicksand. Just seeing him in episode 7--eyes so hollow, expression so cold and broken throughout, like there's a storm inside him that's getting bigger and bigger, like a man who knows he's a sinner, and yet somehow is still fighting not to fall into that pit he's despised all his life, still grasping at whatever shred of dignity he can hold onto so he can face himself in the mirror.

I expected Dynamite Kiss to be a fluffy, Hallmark kinda romcom but it's TOTALLY blown my mind by showing how relationships and love are often not as simple as you might think--sometimes we make bad choices (like Darim making up this humongous lie) not because we are inherently bad but because we really only have multiple bad choices to pick from. Sometimes we go against our very nature and everything we stood for all our lives not because we plan for it but because the longing the desperation to give in to that once-in-a-lifetime happiness is too strong for our flimsy, needy hearts. Sometimes things like love, that are a blessing and a dream-come-true for others, can become the biggest trial and the worst nightmare for some of us. What do we do when push comes to shove?

Coming back to Jihyeok--I don't think he is like his trash father, or at least, he will ever choose to be. That man may trigger his deepest insecurity, biggest trauma and the worst nightmare, but even when Jihyeok is "swaying", he has the conscience to feel guilt and anger, be tormented by his helplessness, and push Darim away by whatever means possible. If he is destined to be doomed either way and he has to choose, he'll choose to be doomed in a loveless marriage, suffering forever, than be doomed by giving into his desire.

And I think that makes the biggest difference.
