She still dances. She practices sometimes, while Fakir writes, and he gives her critiques when he watches her out of the corner of his eye. She’d like to think she is getting better at it, but she really isn’t. It doesn’t matter though, because she dances with so much heart it’d be impossible not to love her moves. Well that and you know… it’s a dancing duck how can you not love that?

She has always and will always be as bad at flying as her human form was at ballet. She’s just so awkward and uncoordinated and jerky and forgets how to move properly and really it’s so much easier to make Fakir carry her everywhere, right? I mean he’s so big and tall and holds her close and….. well she really likes that.

One spring a male duck comes by the pond where Fakir writes and she swims, and he and she have fun swimming about together all day. Fakir watched them sadly and that night he keeps saying that she should go for it, that she deserves to live a full life as a duck, that she shouldn’t hold back just for him. She tries to reassure him, the best that she can without human speech, that she loves only him and doesn’t want to mate with anyone, she just loves him…. but sometimes she really does want to have friends. It’s hard, not being like the other ducks, and not being able to hang out with Pike and Lilie and she really really misses having friends. That the other duck is just that, a friend. Fakir invites Pike and Lilie to joining him by the pond some time later, and of course they come because oh gosh it’s Fakir and he knows they exist and Lilie can’t stop teasing Pike about her crush on him and how it is finally happening! He just hands them some bread though and suggests they feed the ducks together. It’s one of the happiest days of Ahiru’s life, spending a day with her friends, even if they don’t know that that strange duck used to be their friend, or even that Ahiru existed at all! She wonders how she ever could have thought Fakir was mean (and then she remembers and scolds him and he wonders what it could have been he did)
