Everything about this situation was Weird.
Mutou Yuugi didn’t think there was any other way to describe it. He’d heard from Malik that time travel was technically possible, and that the Items were capable of feats he couldn’t dream of, but he’d never expected…
Well, he supposed that was why Malik had phrased it that way.
He sat down uneasily on the familiar bed sheets, absently smoothing the comforter with one hand. It was definitely his room. Definitely the same clutter he’d grown up with. But he’d since moved out into his own apartment, and his room had been converted into an extra storage room for his mother’s convenience.
At twenty-two, Yuugi was… better than he had been a few years ago, emotionally. His dueling skills had reached a plateau, but he still held his titles despite the rising competition. He hadn’t grown significantly, not more than a few inches since early in his first year of high school, but he carried himself better now.
Staring into the startled face of his much-younger self, who’d just solved the Millennium Puzzle for the first time, he couldn’t help but wonder at just how much he’d changed.
“Wh-who are you?” the younger boy asked. It wasn’t quite like staring into a mirror, Yuugi noted--he hadn’t yet started straightening his bangs, and his hair was messier. His shoulders hadn’t filled out his school uniform just yet, and to his surprise, even the pants looked too long.
“I’m…” he paused to consider. Honesty was probably best, but Yuugi knew that the him of six years ago would never be able to reconcile what he was about to say. “I’m you. From the future.”
The younger Yuugi laughed uncomfortably, shaking his head. “No way,” he said, clutching the golden pyramid to his chest. “You can’t be me… I must be dreaming.”
“I’m definitely you,” Yuugi said, smiling reassuringly. “You can ask me anything; I’ll prove I’m not lying.”
His younger self shook his head in disbelief; Yuugi didn’t blame him, but it was still disheartening to see himself looking so small and timid. “I could never be you,” he insisted. The older Yuugi laughed a little.
“Why not, younger-me?”
“You’re too cool-looking,” he replied, and Yuugi had to try hard not to laugh again. The last thing he wanted to do was upset his younger self by laughing at him. He settled for an easy grin, but it faded when the younger-Yuugi looked away.
“I’m not that cool… I’m just me,” Yuugi said, reaching out to press an index finger over the teen’s heart. “In here, we’re the same. I promise.”
