Thoughts of an NBSB
Months ago, I was inspired by my Philosophy professor into writing a post about being someone who never dated. I didn't get to finish it, but I thought it would be a waste of effort if I don't publish it. So here it is, my half-baked opinion about being an "NBSB": I’m an NBSB, and I’m curious to know whether I share the same fantasies I have about teenage romance with other people, particularly those who have the same status I do.
Start.
I’ve never had a boyfriend. I’m still not sure if I consider it a big deal, but I do know that I’m in the smaller slice of the girl-pie. Most people my age have already experienced at least being in an M.U., while I, on the other hand, don’t even clearly know what it is. All I know is that when two people are aware they like each other, it’s on. No other label. I used to consider myself innocent about teenage romance but recently, I've started to wonder why and how I got off the wagon.
Actually, I do know the reason.
My parents have always expressed discouragement in early dating. Pag-aaral muna (Studies first), they would say. I even remember asking my dad about when I'm allowed to date, and he told me he'd let me at college. When I graduated high school, I asked him again, and he took his words back. I knew he would; I just wanted to see how he'd do it. I have no regrets about being held back though, because I'm pretty convinced that they're right. I should study first.
Being in a relationship adds spice to college life. I see that. Seeing other people and how happy they look, I've even wondered about getting into one. But No, says my alter ago. You must study. Save that for later. I guess she's right. But then another part of me argues that when I grow old and have kids, I won't have any stories to talk about. We won't be like how my parents and I used to be, talking about puppy love and stuff. Sure, I could tell them about my ridiculous high school crushes but psh. They'd get tired hearing about unreciprocated love. Sad.
