(more…)

Airacuda And Their Musical Journey
“It’s a cliche but music is really what brought us all together,” said Airacuda bassist and backing vocalist, Matthew Fernicola. Before most of the band moved to New Jersey, where half of its members grew up, they lived together in Boston, squished together in Westland Avenue apartment, which inspired their original band name, Westland Walls.
Not only did the band reflect each other’s commitment to the music, but they did so when traveling through some of the planet’s major cities—Montreal, London, Chicago and throughout the northeast.
After only eight months of being a band, Airacuda went on to record in Abbey Road. “We raced to finish our songs and recorded the entire album in five days,” Fernicola said. That album was their first ever record, their 2012 eponymous LP—Airacuda.
The London experience inspired their latest release, the Feb. 26 EP Daydreaming. “On the road again; seems like we’re always traveling to places we've never been; crossing county lines playing the songs of our lives; fresh faces every night,” sings lead vocalist Matthew Menges on track four, “Sounds Of Yesterday”.
In addition to the Led Zeppelin-inspired band’s recording venture at Abbey Road, Fernicola speaks of the band’s memorable first record being made with some talented people and the “memorable gigs” played at festivals right outside of London, at the Troubadour, and at the Borderline.
Band members also include bassist, synth coordinator, violinist, guitartist, and back vocalist, Eddie Ruddick, guitarist, bassist, and backing vocalist, Phil Marflack, drummer, Owen Flanagan, and producer, Joseph Pomerico.
The band’s new name surfaced thanks to Ruddick. “An Airacuda was one of the worst airplanes that were made for war. We liked the name because it reminded us of one of our favorite band, Led Zeppelin,” said Fernicola. Like a Led Zeppelin, an Airacuda cannot fly very well.
As for influences, the sound of the band is rooted deep in the classic rock era of Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Bruce Springsteen, all the while, following up with more modern bands like Tame Impala, Local Natives, and Young The Giant.
However, even with so much rock influence, Fernicola said, “There is definitely an undertone of jazz in our music. Most of our members studied jazz theory and music in college. We also love to improvise and work off each other, which is a huge part of jazz.”
Airacuda just played at The Saint in Asbury Park this past Friday, Feb. 26 to celebrate their EP release of Daydreaming. You can buy and listen to their newest music and discography at airacuda.bandcamp.com and on iTunes.
“As a band we love performing and feel that it is the perfect way for people to know us. We want to travel the world and play our music along the way,” said Fernicola. The band wants to take Airacuda to Firefly, Governors Ball, South By Southwest, and other major festivals around the world, so look out for their name on your next music festival searches.
