Charlie and I just returned from our morning walk—nothing unusual to report.

Speaking of walking, one of the defining challenges of the U.S. Army Air Assault School is the 12-mile road march, completed while carrying a 35-pound rucksack along with a personal weapon and additional gear like canteens. And let’s not forget the helmet, which adds another 2.5 pounds. The uniform is the standard issue combat attire of the era; in my day, that meant the Battle Dress Uniform and black combat boots.

To graduate from the school, candidates must complete the march in under three hours, as it serves as the final test. My personal time was two hours and five minutes, averaging just under an 11-minute mile—not bad for being in my 40s at the time. Nowadays, my pace is a bit more relaxed; today, Charlie and I covered 2.5 miles in about an hour.
