Some of my character/costume designs & models for the Riven remake!

When I joined Cyan last year it was primarily to figure out what the next game was going to be—I was going to letter the journals for Riven, sure, but then buckle down and focus on the company's future. But it turns out when you're a tiny indie studio, and your entire art team is swamped, and you have a ship day LOOMING in the not-so-distant future, maaaaaaybe it makes sense for Claire to stretch her concept/3D legs and fill in some gaps. 😅

Honestly I do love him a lot as well! I think the problem with him largely comes from the book itself being rushed and not written all that well and Aitrus suffers from lack of character development as a result.

Also STRONG headcanon that he's autistic.

Portrait of the Surveyor as a Young Man. I should probably point out that that's not precisely the map from D'ni to the surface. :-P To make it fit in the spaces I had, I just invented a similar-looking map. I figure Aitrus has been on other expeditions too, after all, planning and excavating new caverns and whatnot. And look, look! I dressed him in guild-appropriate blue for once! :-D

“I haven’t read book of Ti’ana in like at least ten years, so if this is inaccurate forgive me, this is the best I could do from skimming to the first description I could find, my poor memory, and that one picture of Aitrus from riven.

This is THE most perfect image of Aitrus and Anna I think I’ve ever seen…. and it’s a “Happy Anna” to boot! :-)

Finished (and enjoyed) the Book of Ti’ana.  I was a bit sad that Aitrus’s first inclination was to think “It’s my wife’s fault”.  That kind of logic could easily be carried to “it’s the Council’s fault for listening” or all the way back to how each of the whole lot behaved upon first meeting each other. Never ends!

I also felt a certain lack of depth in the side characters.  I think those details sometimes got sacrificed for the sake of the narrative’s pacing. Or perhaps the setting eclipsed them - in the same way that the environment in Myst is a character, there was a great deal of description devoted to the architecture and geology of each Age.

Now, on to the Book of D’ni!

Aitrus and Ti'ana. ^_^ This is a really old piece. I never posted it because, while Aitrus managed to come out exactly as I imagine him, this isn't at all how I picture Anna (that's some pretty dark auburn hair, for one thing!). Oh well, I'll try again sometime. I was just hit by a wave of love for these two and had to post something! :-P
