The ones of you who follow my account for a longer time know that I love blue flowering plants and that I am always on the hunt for a new good one. Last year, I discovered ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’, the common name is buggleweed, and planted it in a shady area in my backyard. It has very attractive, fleshy, dark green leaves that can take on an unusual purple bronze hue. My plant has spread over time and has formed a nice dense ground cover. But what is best about it is that it produces these very showy, clear dark blue flower spikes at least twice a year in my garden. I love this plant so much that now I am trying to get it established in my front yard where it will get a bit more sun and where this photo was taken. What do you think? Do you like this plant? Gardening is not all about beautiful flowers. Especially in a climate like we have here in Austin where growing showy blooms is often a true challenge, leaves become all the more important. I recently came across this beauty at The Natural Gardener, a local organic nursery. It is an ajuga reptans called ‘Burgundy Glow‘ and I immediately fell in love. The common name of this plant is bugleweed or just bugle. Isn’t the coloration of the variegated cream, pink, burgundy, and green foliage just absolutely stunning? In addition to that it is supposed to get spikes of blue flowers in spring. It is supposed to become a dense ground cover that suppresses weeds. I can’t wait until my three tiny ajugas are bulking up and I so hope that they will do well in my garden in the long run. How to you feel about the foliage of plants?
