The Oriental Lilies have started to bloom in my garden here in Austin, Texas! I am growing them for the first time and I am smitten by their beauty. It is difficult to get large and showy blooms in our hot and humid climate but the Oriental Lilies deliver! They were super easy to grow and I intend to plant more next year! Unfortunately, I can’t share the name of the variety, since this one should have been pink but is clearly a mislabeled one! I love it anyway, though! Please tell me, are you growing Oriental Lilies as well? What is your experience with them? Any particularly beautiful varieties that you would recommend? The flowers of our old gnarly ornamental cherry tree have come and gone but they were so pretty while they lasted. Because of our hot spring days flowering trees and shrubs bloom only for a very short time here in Austin, so you need to enjoy them while they are having their moment. Somehow it makes it even more precious when they bloom since their delicate flowers are so fleeting. Happy gardening! These are some of the last daffodils to bloom in my garden! The variety is called ‘Ice Follies’ and I think, it is my favorite. The daffodils rescued my frost damaged spring garden from being a complete disaster and brought much color and excitement to it. I am so glad that I planted them last winter! Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates it! I have given myself a complete day off today and I am looking forward to potter around in the garden. I didn’t have much time to work in the garden lately and it desperately needs it. I hope, I will be able to cut back the last of the frost damaged foliage and then start planting up the flower beds in the front yard. I also plan to set aside some time to bake and have a lovely Easter Tea with my husband. If we are lucky with the weather, we can have it outside in the garden. That would be so lovely! This is what my garden looked like yesterday. The weather had been very warm on Saturday (81 F/ 27 C) and was really lovely on Sunday as well, though temperatures were not as high. The Paperwhite narcissuses are beginning to open and the crimson colored dianthuses seem to have rooted in well and are flowering profusely. Doesn’t it look a bit like spring has come to my garden? If you can’t have snow, at least you can have snowflakes! I found the crimson flowering dianthus in the foreground by chance last weekend which is picking up perfectly the color of the stock from my previous post. I planted them opposite to each other in the beds lining the walkway to our front door. The repeat of the same color in the flowerbeds carried through by different plants I think looks really lovely. Little things like this can make me happy! Potatoes! My plants got hit with blight but I still managed to get 10 pounds of potatoes even with half of my potatoes getting hit with the blight. My baby blacktail mountain watermelon! This is his growth in 3 days!! I mean wow! It's a watermelon that works well up north in the cold. It ripens early in the season and I wasn't sure how it would do in the heat but so far so good! So excited for delicious scrumptious I hope! I will,be making him a sling to support it on the trellis....yes I will make my watermelon a bed, hahaha! Stay tuned!
