Fuck it, I wrote the fic I was thinking of as I watched the surfing at the Olympics. Inspiration very much struck down like lightning, an idea of Adrian competing with Deran nervously watching in the stands. It was great to write, 'cos I've not had time nor inspiration in a long while, so I was doubly excited to have both and fucking went for it!
I usually give fic time to rest and myself time to consider edits, but I'm a Olympic junkie and absolutely want to post during the games, so this has only had two days. That means plotholes and grammar mistakes are probable, please excuse them! Focus on the excitement instead :D
For Deran to be in Tokyo, covid had to disappear, and to make it work somewhat with the show's timeline, I moved the Olympics back to 2020. Meaning no restrictions to travel etc. I have huge respect and sympathy for the entire world affected by the pandemic and think it's kinda crazy the Olympics are even happening at all in our dark reality so I truly hope this doesn't come off as tone-deaf. It's supposed to be a fun, fast fic with some cool dudes and not at all a reflection on reality.
As for the show, it's canon divergent with all of S3 and S4 having happened except for Adrian's storyline. Let's pretend he and Deran were trying to navigate a healthier relationship but that money and drug use were creating obstacles on top of Adrian being away so much.
I hope you all enjoy! Again, I've not seen any of S5 so NO SPOILERS PLEASE :D
(this is one hundred percent @theninjazebra & @onecoloradaykeepsthedoctoraway 's faults for interacting me and encouraging me)
âHave you tried not being gay?â
Deran's still thumbing his nose even though it stopped dripping a few minutes ago. Adrian feels the skin over his knuckles tighten as he clenches his fists; he fantasizes about popping his best friend in the face and takes several deep breaths til the idea passes.
âDon't be an asshole.â He says finally, shoving Deran's shoulder a little harder than he might usually do.
Somedays he doesn't get Deran at all, he's literally bleeding, going to be wearing a black eye for the rest of the week from jumping in on Adrian's fight, Adrian doesn't even need Deran to fight his battles, Deran might pack more fury per square inch in his small body, but Adrian's a big kid and the daily hours of paddling his board out and swimming have given him arms that can pack a punch.
âI'm just saying, it's just. Wouldn't it be easier, if you just? You know?â
Then he goes and says shit like that.
âNo, I don't fucking know, Deran!â
He must split his lip again shouting because Deran's eyes drop to his mouth. Adrian swipes his sleeve angrily across it as Deran's face screws up into an impressive scowl before looking around his shoulders hunching.
âNever fucking mind.â He says fumbling in his pocket for his smokes, lighting one up and frowning out past the bleachers.
Sometimes Adrian thinks Deran comes to school just to start fights - he never seems to go to classes anymore â and other times Adrian wonders if he shows up so no one forgets him.
âI just,â Deran starts again, a little quieter, a little less confrontational. âWhy'd you have to tell anyone?â
Deran pulls his knees up, his arms coming up to wrap around them.
âEveryone's being a jerk. Your Dad is being a jerk.â
âHe's always been kind of a jerk,â Adrian shrugs, more carefree than he feels, answering glibly. âleast now he's got a reason.â
He sees the top of Deran's nose wrinkle in a scowl his face burying further into his arms before he looks up and takes another drag from his cigarette.
âI should fucking punch him.â
âPlease don't punch my dad, he already hates you.â
Deran gives a broken glass kind of laugh, but doesn't say anything more.
Instead they both go quiet, Adrian just breathing, trying not to think what Deran's thinking that's got him twisting around like he is, sucking on the cigarette like it's oxygen.
âJesus Christ, that's gonna stunt your growth, you know.â Adrian teases just because Deran hasn't automatically offered him a puff.
âShut up.â Deran says a hand up, warding off Adrian's seeking hand.
âYou're going to be a midget forever,â Adrian laughs as Deran's face reddens.
âShut the fuck up, I'm going to be taller than Craig."
âSo I should take advantage while you're this size, huh?â
Deran's half formed what? turns into a high pitched squeak as Adrian tackles him.
For the cigarette.
Definitely.
They scuffle around for a minutes, more play than anything, til finally Adrian comes out on top, one handpinning Deran down the other plucking the cigarette from his lip.
It occurs to him as he takes a victory puff still half sitting on Deran, that he's never been able to pin Deran down for this long before. He automatically slides to the side and watches Deran's red face from the corner of his eye as they sit up.
âCome surfing after?â Dean asks, kicking a foot idly.
Adrian sighs and takes a long drag from the cigarette.
âI'll probably be grounded later.â He will be, once school calls his dad and tells him he's been fighting. And who he's been fighting with. What the fight was about will be just icing on the cake as far as Adrian's dad will be concerned.
Deran's foot kicks harder, nose crinkling like he can't believe people get grounded. He gestures for his cigarette back and leaps to his feet once Adrian hands it over. Cigarette in mouth he stretches, arms high to the sky, shirt lifting and Adrian stares for a split second too long before quickly looking away.
Deran looks down, a slow grin with blood stained teeth spreading across his face.
âWanna go now then?â
Maybe, Adrian will think later, he's a bit of an idiot and it shouldn't have been such a big surprise when six months later Deran crowds him into someplace private and sticks his hand down Adrian's pants with that same soft pink blush.
Summary: deran trying to cope with an overwhelming crush. Alternatively: 2 times deran didnât go for it, 1 time he did.
.1.
âCan I go surfing with Adrian today?â
Deran watched Smurf as he waited for her answer. Heâd slowly been convincing himself that they all hated Adrian. Â It wasnât that Adrian was easy to hate, quite the opposite, in fact, but he was still paranoid. Â He was blaming it on the fact that he was stupid and seventeen and starting to think about Adrian in a way that he really, really shouldnât. Â He was terrified that his family was starting to realize it.
But Smurf didnât seem to notice because she smiled, âOf course, baby. Â Just be home for dinner.â
She gave him a kiss before he left.
By the time Deran got to the beach, Adrian was already there and rubbing sunscreen into his skin. The whole scene was oddly reminiscent of a dream heâd had a few days prior. Â Only this time, Adrian had more clothes on.
âHey,â Deran called after letting himself stare for a minute. Â Heâd known Adrian forever, but he still was lost on how his skin stayed so pristinely pale when he spent so much time in the sun. Â even the freckles that dotted his body didnât seem to offer much in the way of a tan.
Adrian smiled over his shoulder at him and Deranâs brain short-circuited.
âHey!â Adrian said, flashing a smile that made Deran feel fuzzy inside. Â Which made him a little angry. Â He pushed both of those feelings away. Â âAlmost thought you werenât gonna come.â
âWhy would I stand you up?â Deran asked, grabbing his board from the back of the truck. Â Adrian dabbed the white lotion on his cheeks, effortlessly becoming so adorable that it was distracting. Â He almost dropped everything.
âI donât know, you physically kicked me out of your bed last week and almost let me drown the week before, so Rude Deran is showing up whenever he wants,â Adrian said, but he lessened the blow by playfully kicking sand his way and grinning. Â Deran looked him up and down, kicking sand right back.
âI⊠didnât mean to be rude,â Deran said.  Adrian rolled his eyes and tossed him the bottle of sunscreen.
âMake yourself useful and get my back. Â Iâm not ready to become a lobster just yet,â Adrian said, his smile still in full bloom. Â He didnât have to tell him twice.
âOkay,â Deran agreed, stepping up behind him as he turned around.
Deran wasnât stupid. Â Horrifically scared and in denial? Â Maybe, but not stupid. Â He was into Adrian. Â It took more than 10 different realization-moments before he accepted that fact, but we canât all be perfect. Â He tried to avoid thinking about what that meant for his sexuality. Â He didnât want to think about it. Â Heâd much rather just think of Adrian and his back muscles and the way he smiled and how he probably looked with his board shorts on the ground.
And he did just that as he began to rub the sunscreen into his back. Â This was probably the most Deran had touched him since he realized he liked as more than a friend. Â It had heat pooling in his stomach. Â He really did keep himself in check for a while though. It took Adrian flexing his shoulder beneath his hand and letting out a little hum before his shorts began to tighten.
Deran paused, focusing on anyway to make it go away. Â He wasnât about to be outed by a rogue hard-on. Â He filled his mind with anything that could possibly will it away. Â Mud, vomit, dead puppies, Craig. Â Frustration filled him when it was hardly working, taking over inch by inch of his body until Adrian hissed in pain and ducked out of his grip. Â Deran came into focus only to see a handprint on Adrianâs shoulder. Â His eyes widened.
âDamn, Deran,â Adrian laughed, smiling at Deran as if he hadnât just bruised him. Â He knew he did. Â Adrian bruised easy.
âIâm sorry, Iââ
âDonât worry about it.  Youâre just too strong for your own good,â Adrian mused, his eyes glistening in the sun and literally how was he supposed to not be into him.  He was too gorgeous and too nice and Deran didnât deserve him as a friend, much less as more than that.  At some point, he realized he was staring again.  âHey, you okay?  Youâve been acting weird lately.  Thought it was just Rude Deran, butâŠâ Adrian asked and God he sounded genuinely worried, what the fuck.
âNo, Iâm fine, justâŠâ He tried to find a good excuse.  Saying âI like youâ was insane and saying âI dream of you nearly every nightâ was worse.
âCody Family Business?â Adrian filled in. Â Oh yeah. Â He literally had the worldâs best excuse.
âYeah.â
âThen come on, get in the water with me. Â Iâll take your mind off it,â Adrian said, grinning that enticing grin as he walked backward toward the water. Â He didnât know how wrong he was.
Deran followed anyway.
.2.
âCan I tell you something?â
Deran turned his head to face Adrian as they laid in the sand on the dark beach. Â It was Adrianâs 18th birthday and for some reason, he hadnât wanted a large party. Â His request came with red cheeks and a timid smile: a night surfing and getting shit-faced, just the two of them. Â Deran had been on cloud nine and, even as his nerves built leading up to it, it was the highlight of the whole fucking year.
âYou know you can,â Deran said. Sincerity was rippling through him and he couldnât find a reason in the darkness to keep his walls up. Â He blamed it on the alcohol.
âBut⊠you promise you wonât freak out?  And that you wonât tell anyone?  Because I donât want anyone to know, Iâm still figuring it all out, I just trust you because, well⊠I trust you,â Adrian said into the sky, not looking over at him.  Deran was okay with the fact he wasnât looking at him.  It meant he could stare all he wanted without Adrian telling him he knew.  He could drink in his jawline and his pale neck, his bare chest that rose and fell with his breath, the freckles that were sprinkled all over his body, the way his eyelashes brushed against his cheeks when blinked, and the way his lips stayed parted slightly.  He was beautiful.
âWho would I tell? Â The only person I tell anything to is you,â Deran said, his fingers twitching in desperation to reach out to him. Â Man, he really mustâve drunk a lot. Â He was feeling ballsy and needy as hell.
The neediness burned deep in his bones whenever Adrian turned his head towards him and gave him a kind smile.  He was nervous, that much was still present in his eyes, but he was smiling.  He had such a nice smile.  If he could just reach out and touchâŠ
âSo youâre not gonna freak out?â
âYou didnât freak out about me,â Deran pointed out. Â Adrian pulled his bottom lip between his teeth. Â
He had accidentally discovered more than he shouldâve about the Cody family a few months prior. Â It really wasnât his fault. Â He came over every Wednesday to hang out with Deran. Â One Wednesday, though, happened to include a job and he walked in and saw a few hundred thousand laid out on the table while Deran nursed a budding black eye. Â Pope nearly lost his shit, but Deran promised to take care of it and pulled Adrian aside. Â Adrian said he had his suspicionsâeveryone didâbut it was a bit more wild to see it in person. Â He also said he was worried Deran would get hurt which had him feeling fuzzier than he really shouldâve.
Deran made sure to tell Pope that heâd made an excuse and that Adrian had bought it.
âThis is different, though,â Adrian said softly, looking back to the sky, âIâm scared youâll look at me differently, treat me differently.â
âYouâre my best friend, nothing you say will make me feel differently about you,â Deran promised and he meant it so badly that it hurt. Â He had accepted that he was attracted to Adrian, that was fine, whatever. Â It wasnât until he saw Adrian throwing up after drinking too much that he realized it was something much worse than that. Â There was no logical reason that he was so worried about him that he catered to him that entire night, and there was even less reasoning for why he still found him attractive when he reeked of vomit and looked sickly as hell. Â Heâd really been trying to get rid of those stupid fucking feelingsâthey made him weak and there was no point since he couldnât act on them.
But then Adrian would smile at him and he was gone all over again.
âOkay, you promise?â Adrian said again, shifting onto his side and facing Deran completely. Â He chuckled slightly, turning as well.
âPromise.â
âIâm gay,â Adrian said, his voice soft and his face scared as he waited for his reaction.
Deran didnât know what to say. Â The first thing that popped into his head was just a chorus of panicky âfuckâs and âoh noâs. Â It was one thing to be interested in a guy who you knew could never like you back, but it was a whole new ordeal knowing that he could and that he still couldnât fucking act on it. Â Adrian was into men and Deran, a man, was into Adrian. Â So, so, so into Adrian.
But what would Smurf say?
âOh, God, youâre freaking out,â Adrian said after Deran took too long to respond. Â His eyes widened as he tried to piece his thoughts together, watching Adrian sit up quickly. Â God, why couldnât he be better with words? âI-I get it if you donât want to be friends with me anymore, but, please, donât-donât tell anyone. Â Please donât tell anyone. Â Iâm still trying to figure it all out and, and I just wanted you to be the first person to know, but I get it if you, you, you donât want to be around me anymore. Â âCause, like, you know, weâve slept in the same bed and I, well, Iâve seen you naked and stuff andââ
âAdrian,â Deran managed to say, sitting up as well. Â He crisscrossed his legs, letting his hands fall into his lap. Â Maybe if he kept adjusting it would cover for the fact that he had no idea what the fuck to say that wasnât âme tooâ or âI like youâ or âholy fuck youâre hotâ. Â The last one didnât even fit the conversation. Â âI donât care.â
There we go. Â Thatâs good. Â Good choice.
âYou donât?â Adrian asked. Â He looked and sounded so vulnerable and Deranâs heart ached.
Again, a million wrong things tried to fight itâs way to the surface. Â âKiss meâ. âRun away with meâ. âI love youâ. Â Yikes. Â Eventually, he found a way to simply say: âYouâre still Adrian, I just know more.â
Whatever was in that alcohol mustâve blessed him with a few extra brain cells. Â It even earned him one of the best smiles in the world. Â Deran considered it could probably overpower the sun.
âCan I hug you?â Adrian asked, but didnât really wait for an answer as he wrapped his arms around his neck. Â Deran was still for a moment, trying to keep everything stupid and out of control in his body in check.
Eventually, he let himself go and wrapped his arms around Adrian. Â Deranâs eyes closed, tugging him close and allowed himself, for a moment, to pretend that this was something different than what it was. Â For a moment, he could pretend Adrian was his.
When he pulled out of the hug, he found it hard to let go. Â Adrian seemed to understand that feeling and their foreheads met in the middle, their hands on each otherâs arms and nothing but the sound of the ocean. Â Deran opened his eyes to see Adrian staring right back. Â They were close enough that Deran could feel him breathing, could feel the tip of his nose brush against his own, and could see the way his eyes flickered down to his lips more than once. Â This was his chance.
Kiss him now or never get another opportunity.
Kiss him. Kiss him. Kiss him. Donât be a coward, kiss him. Heâs waiting. Fuck everyone else, this is Adrian. Fucking do it!
âYouâre a good friend, Deran,â Adrian whispered, his thumb rubbing circles into his bicep and Deran was about to fucking lose it. Â His stomach was so tense it hurt and his brain was so full that he couldnât find anything coherent to say. Â Everything was Adrian. Â This was better than any wet dream.
So, instead, he let his body take over. Â His eyes looked down to Adrianâs lips and then back to his eyes, making sure it was obvious what he wanted and giving Adrian a moment to deny him if he wanted to. Â He didnât. Â Deran slid his hands up over his smooth shoulders, stopping as they cupped the back of his neck. Â And he leaned in.
Their lips were barely a millimeter apart when his phone rang and he was rudely reminded why he shouldnât be doing this.
Deran cleared his throat as he backed away, âI should get home.â Â Adrian was staring at him with a hard to read face, nodding as he let his hands slip away. Â Somehow, even in the heat of California, the absence of his hands had him feeling cold.
âDeran,â Adrian said softly as they both stood to their feet, âYou know you can tell me anything, right?â Â Deran let his eyes scan over Adrian one last time before he had to leave and never got to touch him like he just had again. Â He cleared his throat, convincing himself that he wouldnât miss it.
âI know.â
.3.
âCan I stay with you?â
Adrian blinked a few times in confusion before it slipped into badly disguised worry and he stepped to the side. Â Deran stepped inside, reminding himself that this was Adrianâs place and he couldnât trash it. Â He had to be respectful.
But he couldnât help it, he was pissed. Â His hands balled up into fists, pressing against his head as he took ragged breaths in some stupid attempt to calm himself down. Â He didnât want to fuck up Adrianâs place, but he also really needed to hit something. Â It only melted away a little bit when Adrianâs hand gently touched his back. Â Heâd become way too sure that Deran wouldnât hit him like he would anyone else who touched him like that. Â Thankfully, he was kinda right.
Itâd been a few years since their almost-kiss on Adrianâs birthday and even though they never actually spoke about it, it had definitely changed something in their relationship. Â Adrian felt more comfortable touching him even as, with each passing year, Deranâs anger got worse. Â Heâd manhandled Adrian more times then he liked to recall, but it made him feel better in the moment. Â Later, heâd hate himself for it. Â He already hated himself. Â The prospect of hurting Adrian made that hatred worse and almost confusing.
Why couldnât he just stop fucking liking him? It was such bullshit. Â He was an adult now, adults shouldnât hold on to stupid teenage crushes. Â That was Popeâs territory.
âWhat happened?â Adrian asked softly. Â Deran huffed another heavy breath, his nails digging into his palms.
âItâs fucking Smurf, man. Â She keeps fucking treating me like Iâm stupid! Â Sheâs putting me and Craig both in shitty situations over and over and I swear she wouldnât even give a shit if I died. Â I know she wouldnât! Â Sheâs perfectly content in her selfish little fucking bubble! Â So is Baz! Pope too! Â They all think theyâre so high and mighty âcause, âcause they, I donât know, come up with shit, but even if I came up with shit, itâs not like they would listen! Â They donât give a shit about me, man, Iâm just there to take the fall for shit, I know it. Â Iâm the baby, I donât fucking matter,â Deran rambled. Â Heâd almost begun pacing a few times but pacing meant losing Adrianâs hand on his back and that was the only thing keeping him from doing something stupid. Â âI literally almost fucking got killed yesterday and she didnât even care. Â Said it was my fault! Â My fault some guy knocked me out with a gun and proceeded to fucking hit me when I was unconscious! Â My fault, huh? Â My fault!â
âHey, hey, you know itâs not,â Adrian said, actually reaching up and placing his hand against his cheek. Â A tornado of something stirred in his stomach, staring at this man who thought it was okay to touch him like he might break even when heâd hurt people. Â Adrian knew damn well how dangerous he wasâand he still touched him like that. Â What the fuck? âAre you okay, though? Â That guy, he didnât hurt you too bad, right?â Adrianâs fingers gently grazed over his sore cheekbone.
âThe-the restâs under my shirt,â Deran mumbled, feeling more than a little lost. Â Adrian always threw him off course, but today felt different.
âCan I see?â Adrian asked. Â Today was definitely different.
Deran nodded once, reaching for the bottom of his shirt. Â He got it about halfway before he winced, pain racing through him from the bruises that littered his abdomen. Â Adrian helped him take it off completely and gave him a smile once it was off. Â Okay.
Deran watched as Adrian inspected his bruises, a grim look taking over his previously smiling face. Â Adrian looked up and silently asked if he could touch to which Deran had no choice but to agree to. Â The minute he felt his calloused fingertips against his stomach, every inch of him covered in chills. Â He shouldâve been embarrassed and maybe a little part of him was, but a bigger part was focused on Adrian and how he didnât even tease him about it.
There was a lot of things different about today after all. Â Today, Deran didnât give a shit what his family thought. In fact, he would happily do something to piss them off. Â If he got something good out of it, then thatâs even better. Â He wanted to get away, to start new. Â He was tired of being hurt, being treated as nothing more than a little minion. Â He wanted to stop worrying about all the shit he was worrying about.
What better place to start than with Adrian?
âAdrian,â Deran said. Â Adrian hummed as he stood up straight, standing closer than usual with a confident little smile. Â He knew, he had to know. How the fuck did he know? Â It didnât matter. Â
Deran basically smashed his face into Adrianâs. Â It was a whole lot less smooth than he couldâve been and a whole lot more forceful than that moment on the beach, but none of that really mattered when he was kissing Adrian. Â And Adrian was kissing him back. Â He had to arguments as Deran pushed him against the wall. Â Deran happily ignored the pain it caused in favor of focusing on the absolute gift from God that was kissing Adrian fucking Dolan.
âRun away with me,â Deran proposed, pulling away just enough to get his bottom lip back from Adrianâs teeth. Â Fuck. Â âLetâs get the fuck out of here. Â Fuck my family, letâs go. Â Just you and me.â Adrian furrowed his eyebrows, looking over his face to see if he was joking. Â He wasnât.
âYou really want that?â
âI know a guy down in Belize. Â Letâs fuck off. Â We donât have to ever come back. Â We can spend all day surfing and all night fucking for the rest of our lives. Â Come with me,â Deran proposed, moving back into Adrianâs space. Â He liked it there, it was more welcoming than anything heâd ever experienced. Â He put his lips on Adrianâs neck.
âDeran,â Adrian said, grabbing a handful of his hair as Deran pushed him harder into the wall, âI get⊠I get why you wanna leave, but do you really wanna take me with you?â
Deran stopped, moving to look into his eyes. Â How did he somehow know that Deran was into him, but didnât seem to see just how much? Â That was so frustrating. Â He didnât have the words to tell him how much he wanted it, none of them worked. âYouâre the only one in the world I want with meâ was too dramatic, and âIâve loved you since I was 16 and the only way I can have you is if we go away togetherâ, while honest, was ridiculous.
âIf you want, we can fuck first to make sure the sex is good enough before you agree,â Deran offered, watching Adrian crack a smile. Â He hoped he got it. Â He hoped that him asking at all told him everything that he couldnât find the words for. Â He didnât think heâd ever be able to find the words.
But he somehow had Adrian, so anything was possible.
Deran and Adrian need to have a talk. What better way then to do it in the dark.

~*~*~
When Deran pulls up to the house he sees the house was pitch black and wonders if Adrian was home. He knows he shouldnât have walked out like he did but it was the first time he let out even an ounce of what he is feeling. He was just so desperate for Adrian to hear what he was saying, that this was so much more than just prison. He was so desperate for Adrian to believe what everyone says about Smurf is true.
He has been running around all day for this stupid job that smurf wants them to do, plus trying to get everything set so they could leave as soon as possible. It was the only thing he could think of. They have to leave Oceanside.Â
As he opens the gate leading down to their door he raises his eyebrows in confusion as he sees a surfboard ripped apart, followed by another, and another. His fears grows as he walks faster to get inside.Â
âAdrian?â He calls out as he opens the door. All the lights are off, so Deran finds the nearest lamp. He finds trophies on the floor looking like they have been thrown down and beaten with a bat, even the one Adrian just won. He hears movement in the bathroom and it was just a reflex to grab his gun from its hidden spot and quietly makes his way towards the source of noise. He walks through the door frame to find Adrian sitting there in the dark, fully clothed in the shower, the water was off and he was completely dry but the shower door was closed as he sits with his back to the wall, his knees to his chest and his head hidden from the world
Adrian lifts head up though when he entered the room, his eyes wide and red rimmed but also, they look dead, numb almost.
âAdr-â He starts taking a step closer. Adrian tries to hide a whimper as he plasters himself up against the wall as much as he can. It was then Deran notices he still has his gun in his hand. He curses himself as he puts his gun back and walks slowly to Adrian. Adrian sinks back down and lays his head back on his arms as Deran opens the shower doors to let himself in.Â
âAdrian, what happen out there? All the boardsâŠ.. Was anybody here?â He quietly ask him as he kneels down in front of the taller boy.Â
Adrian looks back up at him and shakes his head. âNo I just never want to see another surfboard again.â
He keeps his head up but he doesnât look at Deran, he looks past him. An awkward silence settles between them that makes Deran start bouncing on his toes.
âI umm I am sorry that I yelled at you earlier but I have a plan I have to wait till tomorrow but-â Deran starts but Adrian cuts him off. Deran feels a spark in the air as Adrian speaks out.Â
âWhat are you talking about? There is no plan. I either go to prison where I will probably die or Smurf will kill me one way or another.â
âI wonât let her do that.â Deran sneers out at the mention on his mother.
âYou canât promise that or you wouldnât have acted like you did earlier.â Adrian moves to his knees as he points to his chest and spits out each word. âI. AM. GOING. TO. DIEâ
âNO ADRIAN, do you hear me? I am not going to let you die.â Deran shouts as he grabs on to Adrianâs arms and shakes him. Adrian starts crying as he tries to push himself away.
âWhy are you doing this Deran?â He cries out as he tries one last push.Â
âWhy the fuck do you think?â Deran tells him as he grabs the back of Adrianâs hair and makes him look up at Deran. âI meant it when I said I love you. I love you alright. I am not going to let Smurf or Pearce or fucking Jack tear us apart. I need you to get that through your thick skull.â
Deran looks at Adrian begging him to finally realize just how much Deran needs him. Adrianâs tears bubble over as he looks down at the floor. Deran leans forward and places his forehead againstâs Adrian as he moves his hands to cup the side of Adrianâs head, holding him still.Â
âDeran you barely look at me anymore. You donât trust me and it feels like you only talk to me when you donât have any other choice. Why are you still trying to help me? How can you still love me?â Adrian starts and looks up at Deran. He can see the moment when Adrian finally breaks. âI didnât know it then, but I know it now. I fucked up so bad Deran. I am putting your family at risk, that is what is going on here right? Even if I never say a word, I will always be a risk.â He cries out, his fingers grasping Deranâs elbows. Almost like he is scared to go any higher, like he isnât allowed too.Â
âI wonât let anything happen to you.â Deran promises running one of his hands down Adrianâs hair before going back to its original place. âI wonât let you die.â
Adrian lifts his head up, eyes begging for something. âWhy though? Why go through all this trouble to save me?â
Deran is to the point of delirious, He doesn't know how else to make Adrian believe him. He chuckles out in despair. He cups Adrianâs cheeks forcing Adrian to look at him. To look him in the eye. âDamn Adrian what arenât you getting? I will do anything for you. Do you know how many times you saved me? You fucked up Adrian but I was the fuck up remember. I was the one that was so far in the closet, so in denial that I couldnât see past the next day. That I would go to such great lengths to hide it but yet sick enough to do anything to keep you. I was dying. You saying no that night, making me walking away. It saved me Adrian. You saved me that night and now it is my turn to save you.â
Adrian lets out a sob as he closes his eyes and falls into Deranâs chest. Deran hold him tight, shocked that he let all that out. It was something that was buried deep in him and he never thought he would admit any of that to anyone but here he was holding his scared lover telling him his deepest and most bare secret.Â
âDeran.â Adrian starts but he breaths a harsh breath out and looks back up at Deran. âI-â he attempts but Deran can see him struggling for something.
âI amâŠ. Deran I am scared. I donât know what to do.â He finally admits as he looks at Deran. All the fear and regret that he has probably been holding spilling out of him. Deran grabs Adrianâs face again, holding it between his hands. Trying to portray the fierce protection he has towards this man.Â
âThen let me handle it. I have a plan. I am getting everything we need. I just have one more job I have to do and then I will get you out of here alright. We can go to Australia, or France, or hell maybe we can even go to Belize again but we have to go ok and we can never come back.â
âWait what are you talking about? Deran we canât just leave. What about Jess? I canât just disappear, she will never stop trying to find me. And what about you Deran! You canât just leave. What about the Drop, what about your brothers? You canât just leave them.â Adrian says shaking his head out of Deranâs hands in denial.Â
âNo no there has to be another way.â He begs as he sits back against the wall.
âThere isnât Adrian. This is the only way.â He answers back. He moves to sit beside him, crossing his feet from under him.Â
He can see Adrian is heartbroken at the fact and he gets it. He doesnât want to leave his brothers. The Drop, yes it was the first thing he did on his own away from Smurf but it wasnât the first thing he ever loved. The Drop is replaceable.Â
âI know it doesnât mean anything now but Deran I never wanted any of this to happen. I am so sorry for everything. You shouldnât have to do any of this.â He starts but clears his throat as it locks up with emotion and tears.Â
âI mean, you shouldnât have to leave your home for me.â Adrian whispers looking away from him again. Adrian feels nothing but shame for what he has caused. The pain that he has caused not only to Deran but to his sister to now.Â
âIâm not.â He hears Deran answer with so much emotion Adrian has to look at him. He knows Deran wonât say anything else. He never knew two words can say so much but it does.Â
âHow can you forgive me after this?â Adrian whispers after trying to digest everything that has been spilled.Â
âThe same way you forgave me after everything I did to you.â He answers like it is the most easiest answer in the world.Â
Adrian shakes his head as he leans back, lightly hitting the wall behind him and closes his eyes. Sometimes he couldnât believe this man besides him. He blindly reaches for Deranâs hand, linking his fingers with the other manâs, desperately hoping the touch will not be brushed away. He can feel Deranâs eyes on him but he keeps his eyes closed.Â
âWould you believe me if I told you I love you too?â He says in the dark, scared to open his eyes and see the answer. He wants Deran to believe him, to know he loves him so much. He feels Deran unlink their hands to move his arm over Adrianâs shoulder and pulls him close pressing his lips to Adrianâs temple then moves to links his other hand with Adrianâs. He feels the hot breath that Deran lets out before Adrian feels him nodding his head. Feels Deran nodding yes.Â
The movement just makes Adrian squeeze his eyes harder to press the tears threatening to fall. He squeezes the hand linked with his as they sit there, wrapped up in each other closed off from the world in their glass shower.Â
âWhat do we do now?â He whispers into the darkness. His head is laying on Deranâs shoulder as Deran continues to keep his arm wrapped around Adrianâs shoulder. Like a layer of protection.Â
âWell I have made my choice. Now it is time to make yours.â Deran answers. Adrian knows what his answer is. It is crystal clear.Â

Oh yeah, a perhaps OOC college AU for Deran/Adrian? You betcha!
I wanted to write a college AU (because all pairings need one) and got the idea of Deran painting and them hooking up as near-strangers, and then things just took off. I wrote it from Adrianâs POV but I really had Deranâs story first, itâs just that Deranâs story got way too complicated and I wanted this to be a fun, swift jaunt through some college boys stumbling steps towards each other.
I realised I would have this done around the time season 5 wouldâve premiered and it felt like a great time to post! So while perhaps not a gritty story in line with canon, and with boys that are a tad too well-adjusted, I still hope it fills the void somewhat!
There is a lot factually wrong with UCSD and probably college life in general, but certain choices had to be made to get stuff in there I wanted, like Deranâs painting and the art studio.
