Posted my first Heated Rivalry-fic! Months ago I said to myself "there's no need for you to write anything in HR-world, there's already more than enough". But like, I'm a fanfic writer, so...
Despite having written in various fandoms for over a decade (incl hockey RPF!), I was nervous to post! I don't think I've ever written in such a large and active fandom before which adds to the nerves, but fuck it, I'm sticking to my ol' adage of "I wrote it, so I'm sharing it". Mostly nervous about the Russian nicknames, wtf, whyyy must there be so many alternatives to choose from?! But I'm okay with the ones I ended up choosing.
There are so many fantastic works in this fandom, that I wondered what I could add that hasn't been done already. Have also been thinking a lot about the line "because Russia!". Had an idea of Ilya getting some kind of response from his fellow Russian hockey players, and having it be cautiously positive! In the books he's portrayed as having no one and being lonely for a long time, and I wanted (some of) his old Russian friends to show up for him now in the way that they can. If a story like this already exists, then I've missed it and would love to read, but also who cares if a similar story already exists? Fanfic is where we read the same story over and over, and we love it!
While wanting to write "the Russian stuff", because I find it such a powerful, important, upsetting and fascinating subject, I'm also painfully aware that I am not the best person for writing it, nor do I have firsthand knowledge of it, and can't say shit about what it's really like. Where I'm coming from as a writer (and IRL), Russian players have to be careful with what they say and who they are seen with. No matter their own personal opinions, they have to delicately balance a constantly fluid line. I really liked the idea of Russians reaching out to Ilya because it's the decent thing to do, and they are in fact, not all assholes. I hope readers will think I handled the subject alright!
And hey, I'm happy too if people read it and like it without giving "the Russia of it all" any real consideration, it's all just fanfic and not much deeper than that no matter how amazingly important my writing is in my head XD
To whomever recommended or mentioned this fic somewhere on the interwebz in the last day or so, THANK YOU!!! I've gotten over 600 kudos in 24h??!??!?!??! And 18 comments!??!!?!? I know how difficult that shit is to obtain, so thank you to all that has take the chance to read it, and looooooove to all that has left a kudos or a comment! It means a lot and keeps me writing! Most of all I'm just glad people have found the fic :) Yay fic writers and readers!
The "subs remaining" at the bottom of the screen has been sending me all tournament long because wtf are you doing using that particular phrase like you're out here disclosing their preferences, and like "Oh no they only got tops left!" XD
It is handy knowing how many substitutions are left, if only there was another way to explain that...

Carter going "Kip!" over and over in Game Changer is one of my fav things in the whole series. Kip!

I know Heated Rivalry is the best TV show ever, but Brideshead Revisited truly is the best TV show ever, a fucking masterpiece in acting and a wonder in adapting a written source. This is how you do it.
Without Brideshead there'd be no HR, fuck it mate, there's a whole bunch of shit that wouldn't be.
Do yourselves a favour and listen to the audiobook read by Jeremy Irons. Amazing.
I'm watching the Euros and the Swiss coach is giving very Mads Mikkelsen-vibes.
It is finally time for the world to see what some of us realized in 2024.

georgepimentel1: I just had to do it! In the back of my mind, I kept thinking about the last time I photographed Hudson Williams. At the Canadian Screen Awards, last night, the atmosphere was electric— everyone was buzzing, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Heated Rivalry star who once served tables at the Old Spaghetti Factory.
This time, I found myself backstage in the Gold Portrait Studio, waiting as the winners made their way through. After Heated Rivalry swept the night with 16 awards, we wrapped up with the cast and crew photo. I then asked Hudson if he'd mind doing a solo portrait.
He smiled and said, "Sure."
I reminded him that I was the photographer who had taken the photo of him and Prime Minister Mark Carney doing "the leg thing." His eyes immediately lit up.
With a grin, he said, "that was you."
Then he added, "Well, we should do it again."
And just like that, there it was—a full-circle moment I never expected. One of those rare moments that reminds me why I love what I do.
never thought I would have so much in common with Mike Myers
THAT'S MIKE MYERS?!?!?!?!?!
Hudson Williams | Best Lead Performer in a Drama Series
I didn't write a speech but I do have a little thank you list. Immediately to all the other nominees, it's just an honor to be nominated alongside you. I'm honored to be Canadian and this is fantastic.

Please y'all. Ilya has not read Dostoevsky. We must be serious.
