Tiwanaku, Part 2: The Akapana
The Akapana Is a pyramid-like structure measuring 257 meters wide, 197 meters long, and 16.5 meters tall. Originally thought to have been carved and built out of a small, naturally occurring hill, recent studies reveal that it is completely manmade, from the ground up. Built with a combination of large and small stone blocks, the largest one is estimated to weigh 65 tonnes.
Surrounded by a trench, thought to once be a moat, it’s believed that Tiwanaku nobility and aristocracy actually lived in the Akapana, and from there controlled the empire’s economic output by assigning its citizenry jobs and quotas in order to meet that output. Conversely, it’s not entirely clear if The Akapana also had a more spiritual purpose, as it prominently features carvings of puma and human heads on the upper terraces, images often associated with shaman-esque shapeshifting rituals.
