Thank you! I had extra fun writing this one.
“Really? You’re still trying to get it out of me?”
“Can you blame me for being curious? I want to know who’s captured the attention of the great Lena Luthor.”
Lena had made the mistake of revealing to Maggie she has a crush on Kara, not realising Kara was within earshot. At least Kara had only heard the ‘crush’ part, not who it was on, but since then, Kara has made any excuse to try and figure out who Lena likes.
Lena rolls her eyes. “Is that what this whole night has been about? Why you suggested a sleepover?”
“No, I just wanted to spend time with you.”
“Kara…” Lena says, a knowing edge to her voice.
“Okay fine, I thought we could gossip, you know, like girls usually do at these sort of things.”
“Are you getting this information from teen movies?”
“Maybe,” Kara says. “But we both never had sleepovers like this when we were young and I thought it’d be fun.”
Lena smiles. “We can braid each others hair and paint each others nails but I draw the line at secrets.”
“I know you’re joking but I’m totally going to braid your hair now.”
Apparently Kara’s being serious as she instructs Lena to sit on the floor and situates herself behind her before her hands pull Lena’s loose hair through her fingers.
She never thought she’d like someone braiding her hair. Lillian was always rough when she was too young to do her own hair, always pulled too tightly and then would scold her when she made any noise in response. But not Kara, she’s gentle as her fingers card through her hair, obvious care in the way she braids her hair.
“I’ll tell you my crush if you tell me yours.”
Lena had thought they’d dropped the subject but that gets Lena’s attention. Kara has a crush on someone? She pauses, weighs her options. Despite the fact that she really doesn’t want to know who Kara likes, she also sort of does want to know. It’s going to hurt, crush that little bit of hope that Kara could like her too when she hears a name that isn’t her but her curiosity wins out.
“Really?” Kara bites her lip. “I didn’t think that would work.”
“A secret for a secret, that’s fair, right?”
“Okay.” Kara nods. She waits until Lena is back on the couch beside her. She looks nervous. “You’ll really tell me?”
“Okay,” Kara says again. She clears her throat. She opens her mouth and Lena braces herself before Kara closes her mouth again. “We’ll still be friends, no matter whose name I say, right?”
“Oh God, Kara, who do you like?”
Kara looks away and Lena’s heart stops with the next word that comes out of Kara’s mouth. “You”
And then she promptly chokes. “Me?”
“Yeah, but, I mean,” Kara stutters. “Yeah.” She says, voice suddenly clear and strong. “Of course it’s you.” Kara looks back at her, even more nervous than before. “This doesn’t change anything, right?”
Lena reaches out, takes Kara’s hand. “Of course not. Except,” she pauses. “Do you want to know who I like?”
“Not really to be honest.” Kara shakes her head with a small laugh. “I had this stupid idea in my head that maybe you could like me back but I’m just realising how ridiculous that is now that I’ve said it out loud. Can we just forget this while conversation ever happened? I think we said something about painting our nails next?”
“What, Lena? Can we please-“
Lena cuts her off. “No, that’s…” Why is she so nervous when she already knows Kara likes her back. “The person I like is you, Kara. How could it be anyone but you?”
“I…” Kara frowns. “You like me?”
“You mean romantically, right?”
“Yes,” Lena says with a smile.
“Oh.” A slow smile spreads across Kara’s face. “Good.”
“Good.” Lena gives their joined hands a squeeze.
“Does that mean I could…” Kara trails off as she reaches out with her free hand, her fingers gliding over Lena’s cheek before they settle on her jaw. Lena feels the touch like fire.
Kara doesn’t finish her sentence but Lena’s pretty sure she knows the ending as Kara leans forward. Lena does the same, mirroring Kara’s actions, heart beating a mile a minute in her chest.
Lena’s breath catches when their lips touch, so warm, so perfect and so Kara as Kara surges forward, untangling their hands so she can cup the other side of Lena’s face.
Lena sighs into the contact, sighs into the feel of Kara against her.
Kara pulls away, only for a moment, only so she can say three words before she’s kissing Lena again.
