Akiko is so charming as a protagonist because she remains very much a kid the entire time <3
One of my favorite things about Mark Crilley is his absolute disinterest in maintaining the suspension of disbelief. The paper thin premise for the Akiko comics is that the prince of a planet called Smoo is missing and his dad (the king) mixed up the investigator recommended to find him with a random Japanese American fourth grader of the same name. Crilley gets Our Heroine off the planet Earth and into a ridiculous space adventure in like three pages and we never worry about it again.
