I woke up absurdly early and couldn’t fall back asleep, but thankfully, I was able to sleep on the bus. Today we traveled 3 hours to the Dagbe Cultural Center, located so close to Ghana’s border with Togo that my phone thinks that we are actually in Togo. This is where we’ll be for the next 5 days or so to study dance and drumming. When we first came up to the place, I was pretty skeptical—the building wasn’t very different than the rest of the village, in terms of quality. That first impression of “not nice,” though, ended up to be totally changed. As soon as we pulled in, there was a drum performance to welcome us. The director of Dagbe, Emmanuel Agbeli, greeted us. We had a pretty simple lunch of noodles with red sauce (which I didn’t eat) and hard-boiled eggs and pineapple (which I did eat). And then it was time to go to the market. This market is very different from the touristy arts market in Accra. It only happens every 4 days and is filled with necessities—this is the only chance people have to buy those things. There was tons of fish (heads still attached), spices, fruits, veggies, shoes, clothes, buckets, ropes, tools, etc. The whole place smelled like dog food, for the most part. And it was packed. Unlike the arts market, where vendors bombard shoppers, here, the shoppers bombarded the vendors. It was a huge labyrinth and everything moved very quickly. I bought fabric to have some clothes custom made for me and bracelets that I’ll give as gifts. When we got back, it was time for the libations pouring. This is done to let the ancestors know we’re here and to ask for their protection and blessings. Emmanuel poured libation for his father, who founded the center. The entire ceremony was done in Ewe—it wasn’t very long. Then it came time for us to drink what he was pouring: a combination of moonshine made in the region and Fanta. We were to drink almost all the liquor in our cup (an amount we got to decide upon for ourselves, thankfully), make a wish to ourselves, and then pour the small remainder on the ground. Even though the liquor was definitely strong, it didn’t have a bite to it the way Everclear does. After the ceremony, it was time to dance. There was lots of drumming and some of the people here got us up and led us in some steps. A lot of children from the village came to watch. And then the kids followed us on a tour of the village. It’s called Kopeiya, and there are 7 sections, of which we saw 3. The kids were absolutely adorable. One was playing with a broken blade from a ceiling fan. Lots of them wanted to hold hands with Evelyn and Martina and Michelle. They were fascinated by our cameras and kept asking to see them and take pictures with them. When we got back, it was time for dinner, and I was so ready for it. There was chicken and rice, so I’ve been pretty pleased with meals here thus far.
