Maslenitsa is a traditional Slavic holiday
In our subconscious, we have remained pagans. Our connection with nature is inseparable.
Pancakes are an allegory of the sun
• The first pancake is not eaten — it is for those above who pray for us
• We burn a straw effigy, representing sorrows and troubles. This is the victory of spring over winter. We scatter the ashes on the ground so that all that is bad returns as good in the form of a harvest
• We roll a fiery wheel down the slope into the field, helping the sun gain strength after the long winter
Symbolically, we burn away everything old, gloomy, and hurtful, and invite light into our homes, passing the energy of fire and warmth to the earth so it may bear fruit.
Forgiveness Sunday is the final day of Maslenitsa week and the last day before Great Lent. When people hurt you, even intentionally, wish for good to return to them. This is your strength — and their chance to become better.
Wishing everyone kindness!
