‘Lend me another name’ - Klyne (Director’s Cut)

Alan Masferrer directs the new video for Klyne, it is surreal, grotesque and hypnotic. The combination of CGI and live action images creates a powerful dynamic between the video and the music. Each building the other in their atmosphere.

The bass and piano and vocals applied to the shimmering surfaces of the subjects fits the clear nature of the sounds. They are unconventional together and are both so good.

Director Interview: Alan Masferrer

Please give us a brief info of yourself I’m a dreamer enjoying life.

Please describe your typical day My poodle usually lets me know that it’s time to wake up. I take a walk with it and have breakfast with my wife. But fortunately after that every day is different and full of surprises.

How have you learned directing/filming skills and techniques? I’m still at an early stage as a director, so I still need to learn a lot... I started to direct my first short films with a Mini DV Handy cam and a lot of patience from my friends, who played some roles. That was totally amateur and I did everything, from the script to the photography, editing and grading. That was my “school”, so I feel totally self-taught. Actually I always wanted to go to a film school, but definitely I think that you have many more possibilities to become a director if you discover by yourself what you want to tell and how.

What are your future goals and plans? On the one hand, I’ve just joined a commercial production company in Spain (www.sleeperscompany.com), where I feel really comfortable and where I’ll try to keep learning. At the same time, I’m receiving more and more pitches from great bands and I’d like to go higher in the music video “scene”. On the other hand, I’ll probably be a father soon and I hope to give my son all my love.

Were you interested in filming or other creative pursuits when you were growing up? How did you decide to directing/filming? I started studying advertising, I loved graphic design and writing, both parts of the creative process of advertising, and I started designing some posters and album covers for friends’ bands and to write some scripts. But when I finished the degree, I found out that what I really wanted to be was a director. At the same time, I played the bass for more than 13 years in a rock band called Twisted Nails. It was a pity to leave it, but unfortunately there’s no time for everything one would like to do.

What is your biggest regret? I feel really lucky, so I have no major regrets… Sometimes when you’re in the middle of a difficult process you think that you’ve done something wrong, like in the editing of my last video (still to be released) where we have had some important disagreements with the artist, and I regretted not to have been more clear from the beginning, but you always learn about that and try not to do the same mistake twice. What advice would you give to a young person starting out? To be honest I’m much better being a listener than a speaker, but if there’s one thing I could recommend is this: just do it. Do what you really want and with all your love and passion. And don’t be afraid to make a mistake, because that’s what makes you learn and grow up. What are you listening currently? Above all, I listen to any song I’m pitching for, but recently I’ve also been listening to bands like TV on the Radio, Basement Jaxx, Future Islands, Haim, Jack White, Royal Blood, Liars, Paolo Nutini, Queens of the Stone Age, AlunaGeorge… and I recently rescued “Dummy” by Portishead and some Northern Soul EP’s. I listen to a wide range of styles.

Do you have any favorite movies or TV shows? Most David Lynch films are my favourite movies ever (Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Wild at heart and of course Twin Peaks series). I also love Stanley Kubrick films (2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and Lolita), futuristic animation films like Satoshi Kon’s ones (Paprika, Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers…), Giallos by Mario Bava and Dario Argento (Suspiria, Blood And Black Lace, Deep Red…), Terrence Malick’s early films (Badlands, Days of Heaven), and most films by Jim Jarmusch, Spike Jonze, Leos Carax, Jonathan Glazer, Gaspar Noe… so well, I guess nothing you haven’t already watched.
