On a cool autumn day, Nora Mulligan married Alan McGregor. Everyone agreed that Nora looked absolutely radiant in her wedding dress and that she and Alan would be very happy together. Though Adela had once held on to a sense of shame that Alan had turned her down to be with her cousin, she watched the ceremony wishing nothing but the best for the newlyweds.

Adela’s Diary

Alan came by again today. He had never asked me about being his girlfriend or expressed desire to go steady, and perhaps I should have known better all along.

“I’m sorry Adela, I do like you and the times we spent together, but I intend to woo your cousin Nora and ask for her hand in marriage,” he said.

I was surprised. Of all people, why Nora? And then I thought about it. Perhaps Madeleine was right and Alan’s attention toward me was nothing special. But I know that he and Nora would make a lovely pair, especially now that she is eighteen and Alan will be soon. “I give you my support in courting Nora, Alan, and I hope that we can remain friends.”

He gave me his hand and wrapped me in one last embrace. Inside, however, I am wondering: my parents want so much for me to find a suitable husband, but what if I never find someone like Alan ever again?

Manuel’s Journal

The other day, my buddies and I were talking about what we want to do when we grow up, once we’ve settled down and found ourselves wives. Alan said that he’d like to be a painter, while Joshua is thinking about getting into local politics. When they asked me, I was not too sure. Being an adult seems so far away. However, recently, Papá has purchased a typewriter secondhand. I was testing it out today and I got a little carried away. I wonder if I could make a career out of it!

Adela’s Diary

I was feeling frustrated with my parents so I sneaked out of the house at night to meet Alan. I told him about my wish to be a teacher and that I had argued with my father but I did not tell him about wanting to wait to get married.

“Oh, Adela, you would make a wonderful teacher. The way you talk about it, I just know.” We talked for quite some more time until he asked if he could hold my hand. I said yes. I forgot how much time had passed by this time. What happened next, I will not tell a soul. He kissed me!

I am wondering where this will lead. Should he propose some day, what would I say? I cannot tell now but I do like him, and now I cannot stop thinking about that kiss. Mamá and Papá would be so shocked if they knew!

Manuel, the more extroverted of the Marquez siblings, loved school, especially recess when he would play with the boys in his class— Alan, Gilbert, and Joshua. He did well in the subjects that he liked, particularly English and Reading. Adela took longer to open up to her peers but had one friend in class, her cousin Nora. Adela was an eager student. She greatly admired her schoolteacher, Miss Hogan, and dreamed that someday, she could become a teacher too!
