Googies Coffee Shop, located at 8100 Sunset Boulevard, corner of Sunset and Crescent Heights, 1949. Designed by architect John Lautner, it came to define a genre of funky, space age modernist architecture and design in the 1950s and for decades following. I’m fascinated with ‘Googie’ cafes all over LA, but especially this one for being the namesake in an influential trend, and right in my own neighborhood. Really wish LA developers didn’t erase our history so much. The new stuff is just so boring. Seriously- when was the last time you saw a new development go up that you thought was truly intriguing or original?
