A favorite campsite in chickaloon
Alaska sounds like itd be fun for a year or so but then you fuckin leave before you die
that's why we have so many tourists that come for the summer (ESPECIALLY in the summer), come see the sights and the pretty glaciers and wildlife from afar in the winter, and then they leave. wish i could too, but alas, i've been an alaska resident my whole life.
the pros are nice- it's beautiful, there's no billboards anywhere because they're illegal, you get paid to live here through the PFD (personal fund dividend) system, i guess if you like weed it's legal here?, and people don't judge you for your fashion choices.
the cons are like. animals try to kill you if you're a dumbass and try to pet the bears (or moose- ESPECIALLY THE MOOSE OMG, moose are killers. all the sayings about alaskans riding and taking moose are JOKES. THEY'RE NOT REAL!!!!- or wolves, or foxes, or pretty much anything). if you go up into the arctic circle, you suffer year round because it's insanely cold. there's- ironically- a lot of conservative republicans here.
What would you change about Alaska if you could change anything? What do you wish more people knew about Alaska?
Give stewardship back to Alaska Natives. There is something to be said about the native corporations but still the fact that Denali is a major tourist pull so we have strangers wandering around poking things but won’t let the people who took care of the land for centuries continue to do so is . . . Foolish. And that goes for the rest of the land and national parks up here.
This is going to sound petty as hell but I really wish people would realize that Alaska is not stuck in 1897. We have internet, we have malls, we have Denny’s lol is Alaska a super special place with a lot of really interesting culture? Yes. But there’s a really weird social disconnect between other places in America specifically and what Alaska is like. It just gets exhausting to hear the same five jokes about living in igloos and having a pet penguin.
Aside from that I think everyone can benefit from studying the Alaska Native cultures up here :) there’s a great variety of traditions because of how large the state is and how many climates we have!
An Alaskan telco is building a 270-mile fiber-optic line that will connect with Canadian carriers and ultimately the Lower 48.
HECK YEAH!
finally... some better quality internet...
So, since 2009 my town’s been trying to get sexual orientation and gender identity added to the list of legally protected classes in our-anti-discrimination ordinance.
The general public tends to respond with “we should be free to discriminate against sinners” but the city administration, trying to be more diplomatic, usually says that there’s just no evidence that discrimination exists in Anchorage.
which is AMAZING
imagine:
An aide frantically rushes into the mayor’s office, clutching a report, and flings it onto his desk. “Sir!” she exclaims. “We’ve done it! No one was murdered at all last year! We’re the safest city on the West coast!”
The mayor chuckles benignly. “Great! Hand me that paperwork. If no one’s being murdered, we definitely don’t need this anti-murder law! (signs paper) Murder is legal now. Pretty soon there will be no laws at all and I can retire! I’m such a good mayor.”
I want to wear heels but ugh this snow hasn't melted and the ice keeps coming back...
