i touched on this a bit in my collei fic but I am, as always, thinking a lot about social/socioeconomic/cultural factors when it comes to disability and I Do think a lot about dunyarzad vs collei and their experience with eleazar. but the most interesting part to me actually relates to the divine specifically? where for dunyarzad Nahida's presence during her illness, despite Nahida's lack of ability (at that time) to actually cure her or indeed do anything to improve her physical condition at all, was a huge boost to her quality of life and inspired in her significant devotion to a deity whose worship is not only unusual at the time but actively discouraged? and meanwhile Collei's in a very bad position in general but on top of that the very genuine lack of divine intercession drives a lot of her anger and hurt. and it's such an unanswered question why Nahida appeared to Dunyarzad and not Collei. Is it a power level thing, she could only at that point appear to one or two sick children? Was there something about the experiments Collei was undergoing that prevented Nahida from accessing her? Was the goddess of flowers "blocking" something somehow? Was it just bad luck? I think that pre-Sumeru archon quest Collei has told herself that she's okay with the gods not paying attention to her but she's not actually okay with it, and finding out that Nahida was also trapped and being controlled and experimented on (or, like, collateral damage to an experiment) etc for things she couldn't control would actually be quite healing for Collei. It wouldn't engender any religious awe (that ship has kind of sailed) but it would release some of that guilt. and then hearing Dunyarzad's story would bring that all up again, but worse in some ways despite now knowing (of) Nahida as A Person Who Exists In The World As A Person (Cyno's Boss The Dendro Archon) and not God.

and then of course Collei is the one with the vision. and her vision is, specifically, dendro

A friend of mine is chronically ill and I'm trying to learn more about the things they may deal with sometimes or often so I can understand and hopefully support or be a friend to them a bit better.

I'm also interested in learning more about disability activism, and it was really interesting to see posts you'd shared about abilism and historical advocacy as well!

I just wanted to primarily apologise for the spam (forgot that word at the start of this!!) reblogs, as well as to share that I greatly appreciated your curated (reblogged and created) posts and to say Thank You Very Much for sharing. xx

If you are interested in disability and theater or creative accomodations in general, I urge you to watch the Hadestown proshot

Not only is it perhaps the best proshot ever made, constructed with the visual language of a concert film in a way that perfectly suits the material, it was filmed while Patrick Page was recovering from an injury that necessitated putting him in a walking boot.

What they've done with it is so perfect for the character that, if you hadn't been told that it was a medical device, it would look like the costume had always had this sick-ass mech boot. I'm not familiar with the exact kind of boot, because it's not shaped like the ones that I've had to use before (having seriously injured the same leg three separate times). Whatever it is forces his heel not to contact the floor, and they've compensated somewhat with a very high heeled dress boot on the other leg.

As you can imagine, because knees exist, it forces him forward, making him move in almost a goat-like way, and it is sheer perfection. The boot is done up with a bunch of sparkly tubes and bullshit that absolutely nail the aesthetic, and it gives him a weird spindly kind of movement that is so incredibly on point for the character. It only underlines his alienation from everyone else, and were it not for the documented history of actors injuring themselves by portraying a disability, looking at you Dear Evan Hansen and basically every production of Richard III, I would say that we should put every Hades in a sick-ass mech boot

This is not the first time that Hadestown West End had injured or disabled cast members, and the way they handled it here it was masterful and really underlines that you can make accommodations and enhance the work

And also goddamn Patrick Page is a hoss, do you know how heavy those motherfuckers are, because I fucking do

He tore his Achilles tendon and the boot is specialized for that type of injury so there's less pressure on the heel. The way he stylized the movement was incredible, I can't imagine Hades any other way now.

Another accomodation for Patrick Page was for hearing - he had his hearing aid in his right ear and an in-ear monitor (most likely with the piano, perhaps some percussion or other solo instruments as needed) in his left ear!!
