The first Palestinian UFC boxing champion is from my balad so therefore I am the first Palestinian UFC boxing champion.
Freshly picked apples, straight from our yard in Al-Bireh, Palestine. They are not all uniform and polished like supermarket apples because they are not commercial objects; they are the organic fruits of a tormented land. Yes, they are no match for the apples our friends in the Golan Heights send us every year, but there is something moving about picking them yourself.
Just got home to this. It's the western entrance of the illegal Israeli settlement called Psagot, which is built on lands confiscated from private Palestinian landowners of Al-Bireh's "Jabal Al-Tawil" (High Mountain).

Death is visiting upon us faster than mourning can keep up. With a heavy, heavy heart, we just buried my Aunt Lekka, better known as Hajja Lekka, in the New Al-Bireh Cemetery. She passed away peacefully late this morning at her home surrounded by family. Aunt Lekka was one of a kind. She played a major role in raising my father and was a cornerstone of an entire family clan, most of who lived in the US while she took care of their lands and businesses here in Palestine. She was a pillar of her neighborhood, a struggler, and not just against the Israeli military occupation, but socially, in her own community too. A woman who had no qualms with calling things as she saw them, be it to an Israeli soldier, the youth of the two Intifadas, or the Mayor of Ramallah. In one sitting, Aunt Lekka could fully engage you in politics, national and local, community and family gossip, and personal relationships. Hajja Lekka is one of the reasons I am in Palestine today. In due time, I have much more to say to memorialize Aunt Lekka, but for now, I just wish her a rest as she never found on earth.
