Pendant 60 ans, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999), artiste américain d'origine roumaine, a contribué par ses dessins humoristiques au journal The New Yorker. Caricaturiste, illustrateur, graphiste, dessinateur de mode et de publicité, scénographe, c'est un créateur infatigable de livres d'images. Son langage visuel riche et ludique en constante évolution et à plusieurs niveaux de lecture, résiste aux catégories critiques conventionnelles. L'artiste ne se prive d'aucun style en faisant se côtoyer différents genres avec pour seul but de raconter par le dessin. Il manie la critique avec un dessin d'une grande habileté, ce qui lui permet d'aborder par l'humour de nombreux sujets de société.

Saul Steinberg n'est ici pas présenté sous le seul angle de la carricature mais comme un artiste aux multiples visages, répertoires et techniques (dessin, collage, intervention sur mobilier, sculpture...). Il a inspiré de très nombreux dessinateurs, notamment Tomi Ungerer, Sempé, Siné, Bosc, Folon ou Roland Topor.

Le catalogue est structuré autour de trois essais, l'un d'Anne Monfort, la commissaire de l'exposition, suivi de ceux de Valérie Loth et de Jean-Pierre Criqui. Ces trois textes sont entrecoupés d'extraits inédits de la correspondance de Saul Steinberg avec Aldo Buzzi, écrivain et architecte milanais, avec qui il partage sa découverte amusée et critique de l'Amérique des années 1940, ainsi que ses réflexions sur l'art. Un portfolio conséquent complète le catalogue et rassemble les œuvres les plus emblématiques du dessinateur satirique.
