i just realized (SPOILERS FOR GRAVITY FALLS S2 BELOW THE CUT)

The reason bill couldn't enter Stanford's mind during weirdmaggedon was the invalidity of the deal.

What was the deal?

"From now until the end of time!"

The main reason was that bill killed time baby, so time had technically ended. Hence, making the deal invalid. I'm pretty sure we all know what happened after that- Good ol' twin switch, stanley punches a dream demon, and we get the saddest episode of gravity falls.

But.

After weirdmaggedon, all the damage done by bill is reversed. This is shown by the existence of the journals.

Time is back too.

Time baby may still be dead, but time has again begun...

Now what were those words??

"From now until the end of time!"

This makes the deal valid again. Time is back. It hasn't ended. Bill can possess Stanford, but instead he takes a less direct route (canonically, tbob was an attempt at trying to get ford to free him)
