you can totally disagree with it, but you can’t resent someone for having it. because people have opinions and preferences no matter what.
Hmm, let me give an example.
If someone says "I like Star Trek" and you say "I disagree", you are literally telling them "No, you do not like Star Trek." I don't think I need to explain how stupid this is. :)
If someone says "Star Trek is awesome!" and you say "I disagree", you are saying "Star Trek is not awesome". Which makes no sense in this particular context, because "awesome" is a subjective opinion which at this moment has already been temporarily defined by the person who said "Star Trek is awesome". You can't argue with a statement like that because you can't understand what it means, unless you have the exact same brain and tastes as the other person. The subtext of "Star Trek is awesome" is "Star Trek fits my taste splendidly" which is obviously something that can't logically be argued with.
For these two reasons, I say you cannot disagree with a preference (the former example) or an opinion (the latter).
I believe, however, that you can disagree with a general statement, i.e. "Star Trek is better than Star Wars", because the statement implies a certain level of objective quality rating that goes beyond personal taste. And this can even lead to an interesting and mutually beneficial conversation. (Which neither of the previous two responses are likely to achieve.)
