Pimping our work spot
Today we finally made our study environment a little bit more lively. A task of which the result should not be underestimated. I’m actually looking forward to go to uni tomorrow, hang my jacket on our private coat hanger, have a look at the important deadlines, get inspired by explorations of the past week hanging above the table and GET ON WITH IT!

#Project: Presentation NS game design pressure cooker
To finish the pressure cooker assignment (in which you go through a whole design proces in a very short period; 2 weeks) every group held a presentation about their concept.
Our concept was a game in which you have to make sure that the next train has a certain delay within a short amount of time, by using tools like leaves to throw on the train tracks or throwing somebody on the track. The more levels you win the more tools you get, but at a certain time the plot of the game changes and you all of a sudden change perspective to become the NS. Now you have to make sure the delays that you created in the first levels are being diminished. This change of perspective was our element of persuasion: the levels after the plot twist are a lot harder, which should get people to think that solving delays is a lot harder than causing them.
Although I was not a particular fan of the kind of gameplay, I decided to make the best of it since there was a lot of time pressure and the others in my team did like it a lot. This was a good training for my attitude as a designer: making quick choices and taking time in consideration to deliver the best presentation.
This was the video I made, with which we started the presentation. I created a prototype of the app to make it look like the product was already on the market. A special thanks for Muca, who offered to star in the video!
#Assignment: 1st presentation Designing Tangible Business Models
During the second week of the assignment we had to prepare a presentation about our research on the various customer segments that were involved in the business model for the future of Sciencepark TU/e.
We made our presentation tangible by having 4 of our group members behind the presentator (Mücahit), each holding a sign that showed a particular segment. Mine was: Students. During the presentation Mücahit explained our research while putting sticky notes with keywords on the signs. Even the distance in which our group members were positioned relatively to each other had a meaning and in the end Mucca positioned us in the way the businessplan should work. That last part was looked pretty silly (four guys holding hands), but that was exactly our strategy to make people remember our presentation.
Already after this presentation meeting, I understand part of one of my learning goals, which was: Learn by doing what the value is of being able to create a tangible business model is. The answer is actually quite simple: On the one hand because you act out in front of your audience, you can not explain the model faster than you can move, which keeps it low pace and understandable for the audience. On the other hand you will have an original presentation format which also keeps the attention of the audience longer because they simply are excited to see your play.
2nd coach meeting
For this meeting Ard asked me to write down key words that capture the attitude change that I want to achieve at the end of this semester. Here are the ones I chose:
CHOOSE, I need to make decisions faster. You can doubt any decision, and there will always be better options, but every hour of postponing the decision is an hour less to create convincing prototypes and presentations.
START, I always procrastinate. There are some twisted nerves in my mind that make me think that I always have to create an environment with perfect conditions before I will be able to create a good design. As a matter of fact, I know that if the pressure becomes high enough I can work anywhere. So... I just need to start right away with stuf, no matter the surrounding conditions.
PROFESSIONAL, I want to attain a professional attitude, and be more achievement oriented. Mainly what I mean is work harder, network better, and use that network better.
Ard proposed to me to pretend that I already am the owner of my own design company and that I want to put my designs on the market and make money. I think this is a very good idea: From now on I will be studying as THE gamechanging-moneymaking-legendary-designer: Alex de Ruiter! Come to me if you need anything.
Other goals I have now:
find & prepare for internship next semester
look for inspiring and motivating people that can guide me into creating a vision about what I want to achieve with design. Do I actually have a vision that I believe in?
keep this blog alive and get other students to follow me and start their own blogs!

#Assignment: personal learning objectives Designing Tangible Business Models
As homework for the 2nd week we had to define our individual learning objectives for the assignment. I created a plain list to be able to quickly look back at it later:
Learn to make a business model, to be able to create them myself when I want to start myown company.
Learn by doing what the value of being able to create a (tangible) businessmodel is for adesigner. Moreover, what steps to take after you have generated them.
Change my attitude to become more direct, honest and achievement oriented within mystudy environment. (like Winston Wolf in Pulp Fiction)
Meet likeminded people during the assignment and learn from their experiences andexpertise.
Learn how to create a convincing and tangible prototype from a written business model,and experience first hand what impact it has when presenting on an external penal.
Learn about Camilla’s vision on the importance of the business canvas. Students often say that they use the business canvas as an easy way to say they have worked on business processes competency. Is it really so easy, or is there more to it?

#Assignment: Creating Tangible Business Models: Case
In the assignment we try to find out what exactly the plan and strategy is for the new TU/e brainport 2020. After analyzing this plan it's our job to crack it, hack it and modify it with the use of the Business Model Canvas to come up with a tangible business model that applies to the future of this campus (even further than 2020). At the end of the course we will present this model to an external panel (which is exciting!).
In 2020 TU/e wants to have a leading position in the world as an international research university in engineeringscience & technology. It will be known for its considerablescientific and societal impact and for the major impact it has on the competitiveness of Brainport (Southeast Netherlands) and the Dutch knowledge economy.
#Project: Start of Persuasive Games
To learn more about programming and also because I didn't think the offer op projects was really great this semesterI chose to sign up for the Persuasive Games project. This semester I will work on an individual project, which will be a true challenge for my self directed learning skills. I will have to make sure that I meet up with other students and regularly ask for feedback and help.
The design challenges (from project description): In this project, you will design a game or playful activity that lures a person in (how do you design something that evokes curiosity and persuade people tostart playing?), engages them fully (how do you motivate people to persist inan activity and become fully engrossed by it?) and through play changes theirattitude. How to design for attitude change is also still very much an openquestion. Should the message be overt or covert, explicit or allegorical, emerging from playful mechanics, etc.
At the introduction lecture of the project we were shown some cool persuasive games which give you a quite sophisticated and empathic insight in different ways of thinking, around the world. Some of these example games were:

Personally I think that miscommunication and misunderstanding of others is one of the bigger causes of trouble in the world. Making a persuasive game that helps people understand different perspectives in complicated situations is a way for designers to actually make the world a better place. This is why I am so excited to start this project!
