More “Reverie” world-building thoughts...
The more details we get about Reverie, the weirder the overall picture gets. So, apparently the program has moral guardian protocols in place, preventing people from playing out their Nazi fantasies, which has led to the rise of...Dark Reveries? Which are supposed to be...what? Unlicensed hacks? Discussion about unlicensed hacks and how they may be performed? There’s the mild implication that Glenn’s Reverie this episode was meant to be such a Dark Reverie--the theft of the BCI makes no sense otherwise--except that we’ve actually seen that Grand Theft Reverie is perfectly kosher. Is the difference that armed robbery in fictional banks is fine, but stealing from existing places is not? If so, how does Onira-Tech tell the difference, given that the contents of a Reverie are allegedly one of the few things that are kept private from the company?
Also, if illicit individual Reveries can be programmed, traded, and used, how far away are we from Reverii, the pirate system for people who don’t want to deal with the actual system? Is it already here? If so, why doesn’t the world look a lot more interesting?
Then there’s the fact that you can apparently get BCI’s anywhere without much trouble, except when you can’t. While that sort of answers the question of whether every user has to go through the Onira-Tech office we see every episode--apparently not--it also raises a bunch of different questions, including, well: what is Onira-Tech’s endgame, regarding Reverie? Alexis talks about giving access to everyone in the world, and Hill’s claims that the official goal for the company is improbably ambitious 100 million 2.0 users in five years, and yet at the same time, the company appears to quite reluctant to just make sure everyone who wants access can get it, what with its alleged screenings and protocols; it’s actually more like “everyone we want using Reverie will get to use it,” which is...not the same thing. Add to that the fact that Onira is in bed with the military industrial complex, and willing to take some extreme steps to maintain control of the tech which means...well, for one, that it’s hard to take any alleged altruism at its word.
Four episodes into the series, it feels quite a bit like the series is attempting to have it both ways, regarding the morality of its actions and characters. It’s certainly hinting at dark sinister secrets, but at the same time it certainly seems to want us to root for its non-Mara characters. And while some of it is intentional, it’s hard to feel confident that it’s all intentional. It feels sloppy, rather than impressive.
