Alexis was seven when her mother did what was unthinkable for someone like her and separated from her husband. Her mother Mira had been a nurse when marriage pushed her into domesticity. While her career had been cut short, she found contentment in raising Alexis and her younger brother Seth in her otherwise loveless marriage. However, despite her parents’ efforts, Alexis could always overhear them arguing – over how they spend their time, over how they spend their money, over anything and everything. When Mira learned of her husband’s vices and involvements with the French gang in their neighborhood, she drew the line for the sake of her children. Against the wishes of her family and friends, she gathered her strength and moved the three of them away from the community they once belonged to, ostracizing her in consequence.
As a child, Alexis never understood the full impact of that until the three of them started fresh in the London borough of Barking. Mira continued her nursing career, which often meant a lot of late shifts and time away from home. Alexis was left to look after herself and her sibling in their shoebox apartment, a stark contrast from the full house with relatives and family in every corner. Whatever complaints she had she kept to herself, Alexis not ignorant over her mother’s efforts to give them a better life despite having to do so completely alone. It was by no means was ideal or easy, but it instilled an early independence in Alexis she couldn’t have gotten elsewhere.
Their fortunes changed tides in their favor, or so people assumed, when Mira met and eventually married Henry Larsson, who had been a patient briefly under Mira’s care. After a year-long romance as well as Mira’s finalized divorce, Mira and her two children eventually moved in with Henry. Admittedly, Alexis had been apprehensive at first, concerned his kindness was only a means to an end, but the conditions never came. The new house over their head or the food on their table never came with a disclaimer; the support he gave Alexis in her endeavors never came with an expectation to succeed and never stopped when she fell short. While Alexis took pride in being mainly raised by a single mother, she also appreciated having a father in her life, too.
Seeing firsthand how they supported and took care of each other, Alexis knew what they had was more genuine than what her mother previously had. Unfortunately, given their 18-year age gap, not everyone saw the same picture. Henry’s family and colleagues had their doubts, concerned that Mira was only interested in his money and his lifestyle that was far above her own. His daughter from his previous marriage, particularly, didn’t take to the new additions in her broken family either. As she did before, Mira trudged through the new hardships she encountered, quietly accepting whatever was thrown her way but never letting what they say affect her.
However, Alexis was affected, whether she’d admit it or not. She knew people accused her mother of being a gold digger despite being nice to her face. She knew people saw Henry as her family’s savior, never considering that Mira brought joy back into his life. She knew people saw her family as less, expected less of them, because they had come from less. All those people infuriated Alexis, but more importantly, they have lit a fire under her, pushing her to prove them all wrong. It took an extra effort academically, but in the end, she had earned a place in LSE where she graduated with honors. Though she could have worked her way up in her stepfather’s investment firm like her step-sister did, Alexis decided to make her own path and accepted a full-time job at Boston Consulting Group.
Alexis had only been a consultant for a few years when the opportunity to work in the head office came along. While far from home and her family, it also meant being far from the prying noses of “concerned relatives”, who have since quieted down but were nonetheless judgmental. So she packed her bags and made her way to Boston, Massachusetts. Being there opened doors to a new opportunity she never considered until reaching stateside – earning a master’s degree from Harvard. And for a while, Alexis had a great time in the United States. She had a job she loved, was surrounded by people who actually appreciated her presence, and was on her way to making a name for herself.
Things took a turn when her biological father appeared on her doorstep after almost two decades. Finding her online, he wished to reconnect and make amends after his long absence. Though relieved her father was still alive after years wondering if his decisions caught up to him, she wasn’t any less apprehensive given the bed he had made for himself. Despite her concerns, the image of her father looking a lot older than the man she remembered all those years ago made her put her worries aside and give him a chance. The two met a few times, catching up on the years they’ve missed. She should have grown suspicious then, when his life seemed too quiet, too convenient. But even if she had, Alexis could have never expected watching her father’s secrets unravel when she witnessed him get attacked.
What would have happened if Alexis hadn’t intervened, she didn’t know. The fact her father refused to report the incident to the police or get medical attention made her worry further until he explained who his assailants were – former colleagues he owed a debt to, whom he ran from when he realized they were part of the problem. As much as Alexis should have taken his words with a grain of salt, she wasn’t about to throw him back to the sharks either, so she helped him go on the run again – not knowing if what she gave would go towards his safety or his demise.
In hindsight, Alexis was naive to think cutting ties with her father would be the end of it. She didn’t account for his creditors to start going after her – first to seek her father’s whereabouts, then eventually to pay on his behalf. Against her better judgment, she kept quiet about the matter, not wanting it to compromise her job or the people in her life. She was adamant the men would leave her alone once they realize she wouldn’t give them a penny for her father’s debt. Alexis’ resolve wore thin however when the threats made to her were turning in to action, and that sooner or later what she had been trying to protect would be on the crossfire. But, with no information on her father nor the means to fully pay his debt, she took a page from her parents’ books and left the life she built behind.
For two years, Alexis used her connections to get to where she needed to be, picking up freelance work along the way until she crossed paths with an old acquaintance. What started as a simple favor eventually turned into a regular thing when she accepted his offer to be his personal assistant. The setup had been ideal – working behind the scenes for a busy man who traveled often allowed her to remain on the move but also gave her a sense of stability she had missed. Too much, perhaps, that when her boss decided to settle in London indefinitely, Alexis conceded, her longing for home and family deafening her fear of her past finding her. Whether this was another decision she’d come to regret, only time will tell.
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Spencer Berkeley (fiancé)
FAMILY: Sabrina Larsson (step-sister), Seth Larsson (brother)
CONNECTIONS:
Revati Sharma: Childhood Friend. Though Alexis barely kept in touch with her relatives in Birmingham, Revati (and in consequence the rest of her family) was an exception. Years and distance did little to make them lose contact, with Revati being the closest thing she has to a sister. While Alexis hasn’t been fully honest about her time away from London to Revati, their friendship is one Alexis holds above most others.
Spencer Berkeley: Friend. Few people can tolerate Spencer, and Alexis just barely made it into that category. Ever since Cassie introduced him to Alexis during their shared time in university, they established a banter that equally vexed and entertained her. Alexis appreciates his point of view despite how harshly he expresses it, and most of the time she regards him as a friend. However, with multiple instances of the two ending up in bed together after having too much to drink, she questions whether they’ve crossed a line they shouldn’t have.
