Alex always seemed so practical and steadfast that it was amazing to see her looking so dressed up and pretty, hair done like that instead of neatly brushed or back in a ponytail. (Alaric had to admit to a… ‘thing’ for redheads in general but since he didn’t exactly have a type, he didn’t make a deal of it. There weren’t a lot of girls in the school who smiled so frequently, and not a lot of people at this dance smiling so widely. She was a beacon.

Alaric approached her with a smile. “Definitely born ninety years too late,” he said. “Can see you in the 1920’s dance clubs drinking bootleg liquor and smoking through one of those long filtery things, draped in millionaires and musicians.” He gave an appreciative laugh. “That’s my way of saying you look really pretty. I’m out of practice with compliments.”

The music was too fast. Alaric couldn’t dance to it. Awkward. He scrabbled for something to say, that he was glad he’d come, glad he got a chance to see her like this, hoping the next one would be better, and after a moment, smiled.

“I’m not the best dancer,” he said, “so this is more my pace. Which is my way of saying, would you dance with me?”

Lifting the female ban

I am lifting the female ban for a little while - four female characters who have already spoken to me can have first dibs. That might need to be it for a little while - we did get some males join up.
