so after reading some of it, i think im also angry because it wasn’t really marketed as what it is? which i shouldve expected i guess. it’s more like literary criticism via poetry and mixed media thru a nonlinear story. a sort of contemporary museum exhibit made into a book is how id describe it, and thats v much not a slight. i fucking adore contemporary art, its the best type of art.
but it was advertised as more of a weird trans scifi epic poem in an island that isnt PR but very much like it. by advertised it has a man-centaur on its cover. which would be extremely up my alley and it’s loose narrative is that and it revels in weirdness but a more academic/experimental/museum-type. it wants to deconstruct cis text and such and does do that. its very “i went to an ivy league school and all my friends are professors.” not a bad thing either, just the truth.
oh well. i still think the sitting in a ceiba eating tostones de pana is an utterly unforgivable way of starting any book whatsoever though. and the whole ‘sprinkling greek gods’ here and there is a crutch
roque raquel using the illiad for their shitty poem is absolutely sending me in a negative way. no puerto rican colonialism isnt a brutal war. no poseidon would never ever be nice and give you a queer body. i have my doubts abt the muses being on your side. it seems you are not taking roman/greek lit seriously if you’re painting them as anti-colonial.
