The Wend*go is Not Your Cryptid

I'm Algonquin/Ojibwe and this is a spirit that comes from our teachings.

As a young child, the elders taught me to never even SPEAK its name, to not even sing its songs. When we sang a song about it during drumming group one year, we all got in trouble.

You do not spell the word or speak the word.

It's NOT a "cryptid" or a "spooky story" for white people to appropriate.

Its bearly spoken about in our own communities, and even then, only very carefully.

Again, not because its "creepy" but because its respected and something in our traditions that is not played around with; so its certainly not for non-ojibwe/algonquin people to speak about whatsoever. Period.

The Ottawa Anarchist Bookfair will take place on June 27th, 2026 from 10am - 3pm. Spread the word!

okay so I went down a rabbit hole today about Algonquin calendar systems and found this guide with all the names for the different moons between the three major languages.

Here's the Ojibwe names (page 1 of 3, highly detailed, very cool):

Awesome. Meaningful and interesting. Now here's the Cree:

A little bit less detail but that's okay! Still very interesting and specific names to detail the different phases of the year. Love it

And then the Mohawk nation...

Truly, so good. Why use lot word when few word do trick?? Aksbdjsbs I just lost it when I came to this section.

Like...

Ojibwe:

"In naming our moons, we synthesize the notable wildlife milestones of each season with our spiritual teachings to come up with a name that is both meaningful and relevant. 😌"

Cree:

"We named our moons after the notable activities of nature that hail the changing of the seasons and the cycle of life. 😄"

Mohawk:

"Ummm when it's cold... it's the cold moon 🌕🥶 And when it's colder?? Yeahg. That's the bigger cold moon 🌕🥶🥶"

"Poverty moon 🌕🫗😔 .......... more poverty moon 🌕🫗🫗😔.........."

"Yay buds! 🌕🌱😄 Bigger buds! Yay! 🌕🌼😁"

To be clear, I mean no disrespect at all to the Mohawk nation, y'all are so cool and badass (shout out Kanesatake Resistance of 1990) but these names just take me outttt. I'm so charmed by them <3
